Monster of the Day #3217

So, anyway, T(ween) Fest 2021. A roaring success, in that we had basically everyone return (who was just regularly available) after cancelling one event last year and having limited attendance–for obvious reasons–last fall. Back to normal, baby.

Apparently the Houston Group of myself, Jeff and Kirk and Patty missed the very first unofficial flick on Friday afternoon, Shock Waves. Too bad, it’s not great, but it’s fun and a bit of a small gem. It’s certainly the best of the weirdly fecund Underwater Nazi Zombie movies. And yes, I’m including the Snow Dead films.

Plus it has John Carradine and Peter Cushing.

  • I’ve seen this movie once. I can recall bits and pieces of it. That’s about all I can say. It wasn’t good enough or bad enough to make any other impression. Save the usual one: What is it with Nazis and Zombies?

…although I’m not sure what’s up with the still. I seem to recall that if you took off their goggles, they died? Been years since I’ve seen it.

I dunno. Wish I could remember the name of the Chinese movie with the Imperial Japanese zombies- it was a nice change of pace. Funny that none of the Italian horror movies featured fascist Italian zombies- too close to home?

I have the DVD, I need to pull it out and re-watch it. The commentary is pretty entertaining. Forgive me, I think I’ve stated this before but the director had the actors out to supper to discuss their roles. And he told Carradine ‘We need to talk about your character.’ And Carradine slammed his fist down on the table and said something along the lines of ‘I will not! This is the same character I’ve played a billion times and I can play it in my sleep!!!’

While picking Cushing up at the airport they drove pass an IHOP sign advertising buckwheat pancakes. And he claimed Cushing kept asking about driving back and getting him a plate. Gee whiz, he was an elderly man, just lost his wife, and was a legend of the silver screen- get that man his buckwheat pancakes!!!

It only seems to work if they’re also in direct sunlight. Otherwise it seems to inconvenience them nary a bit.

I get time constraints. They probably booked him for like a day or two–same with Carradine, which is why they don’t appear together–but even so, yes, get that man his pancakes. Hell, just get dinner at IHop. Two birds, one stone.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, despite the lighting I think this scene might supposedly be taking place in a darkened room.

  • Gamera977

Sounds right. The guy who did the commentary, I think it was the director was brutally honest about the tiny budget they had. So they couldn’t have had the name actors for long. And they had a very tight schedule before the condemned hotel they were shooting at was bulldozed.

Weird, I think I saw that when I was a puppy back in the 60’s!
