UPDATED: Monster of the Day #3200

I actually have a built up and painted figure of a Saucer Man in my living room, and it’s very nice. However, this kit is great. Hats off–and heads off–to any tribute to the great Paul Blaisdell.

REVISION:

Answering the note below about the color of the Saucer Men, here is a candid shot of Blaisdell with the head. The color clearly isn’t perfectly accurate, but I’d say it’s reddish/orangeish brown?

    Whoa, now that is cool!

  • Rock Baker

This is the Billiken kit. I painted Pop’s model for him and I used a very similar color scheme. I almost thought this was the one I did, but I didn’t use the actor head.

The saucer men costumes used in the film were brown, then?

I thought it was pretty much standard for Hollywood monster makers in the forties and fifties to paint their creations green — not that it mattered much, since most films from the era were in b&w anyway.

In the ‘you can’t make this stuff up’ column, something that may be of interest to a few people here. Film rights to Fraser’s Flashman ended up in the hands of Disney. They may even be planning a movie about him.

    Wrap your head around that.

He’ll be lectured by Strong Women a lot more than in the novels.

Ken — thanks for the pic!

  • So, if you ever check out How to Make a Monster, the last reel is in color and ends with the Blaisdell expy’s house burning down around him, while all his makeup masks are destroyed. They were able to use some of the actual Blaisdell props to destroy in the fire, and the Saucer Man mask was definitely on the red side. More weirdly, Beulah isn’t green either, which is how I always imagined that critter.

  • Sandy Petersen

It’s well known all martians are reddish.

  • Ken_Begg

Good point. See Angry Red Planet.

Now that I think about it, I think I would have gotten a gigantic headache if I had seen ARP in a theater and was subjected to that color filtering on a big screen.
