Monster of the Day #3192

I think there was a gap after the Aurora kits came out, but then another company (I think it was Fun Dimensions) realized that there was no copyright or licensing issues on generic, 50s-style giant bugs. These were very fun because they came with these dioramas with crushed cars and running victims, etc.

Jenny Nicholson would love this one.

That’s a very nice paint job. I’ve seen these around but never that well done.

If memory serves, the series was called The Gigantics. The bugs were accurate and could be used a science display models, but obviously what made them so cool was the giant monster diorama aspect. There was a tarantula, a scorpion, a mantis, and a wasp (weirdly, not an ant model in the line). What really made these kits great (beyond what you can already see) is that the box art was done up like newspaper headlines. I think the title for this kit was GIANT TARANTULA DESTROYS POWER STATION!

  • I had this one, the scorpion, and the praying mantis.

  • God is that pretty.

Consider she went across country to pick up a gigantic spider plushie–yes, probably.
