Jenny Nicholson, Influencer?

I’ve written before about Jenny Nicholson, one of my favorite YouTube vloggers, and even talked about her two and a half hour dissection of the CW show The Vampire Diaries. How good was the video? Well, I watched a two and a half hour dissection of the CW show The Vampire Diaries. I wasn’t the only one. In the month since the video went up it has garnered two millions views. (!!) I mean, I’m sure not everyone watched the whole thing, but still.

Anyway, I stopped by Amazon and noted they are currently having a 34% off deal on The Complete Vampire Diaries on Blu Ray. Coincidence? I’m thinking not. Unfortunately I’m sure Ms. Nicholson isn’t getting any sort of piece of that. On the other hand, I’m sure you also make a fair amount of coin when you post long videos that draw two million views. Good on her, in any case. And I can’t really fault Amazon. I don’t know if they track certain people on YouTube, or numbers, or maybe just a certainly number of people dropped by Amazon looking up The Vampire Diaries and that sort of thing automatically triggers a sale. Or maybe I’m completely wrong, although I’m thinking I’m not.

By the way, her most recent video runs about 15 minutes and shows her hand-crafting a “furry trout” (I guess it’s some sort of cryptozoological thing). Well, from a preexisting plush trout, but still. In any case, I remained enamored of her for just making and putting up whatever sort of video she feels like.

I agree about her–she’s very refreshing. Very smart and perceptive, but in a conversational way so she doesn’t seem like she’s lecturing anyone. I’ve watched a number of her long-form videos and she always makes great points.

And I practically never watch really long-form stuff (okay, RLM, I’m guilty of that). Heck, I cringe when my own videos go over five minutes.

I’ve seen a few episodes, but haven’t watched the Vampire Diaries one yet. I also enjoy her style, sometimes she’s talking movies but other times it will about some random piece of fanfic she stumbled on. It’s always interesting and usually funny! I only know about her because my daughter is a huge fan, so seeing you talk about her is like world colliding for me!

By the way, Jenny used to be (or perhaps still is) part of a channel called Millennium Falcon (part of Screen Junkies) where she’s a much more typical YouTuber. She goes to conventions and such, and while she’s still pretty funny, she’s much better in the “I’ll just talk to the camera” mode of her own channel.

I have to admit, I love a lot of her stuff, but I really love her whole thing. The complete non-dependence on production values (sit on bed with a silly hat or plush animal or homemade costume and go), her manner where she can just take things apart but never ever seem mean about it, and again her decision to just make whatever she feels like whenever she feels like it. I really think she’s living the YouTube dream more than anyone else I can think of.
