Monster of the Day #3155

It’s been a long time since I saw a trailer for an American film that really excited me. Yesterday they dropped the first full trailer for Godzilla vs Kong and I have to admit, it looks pretty great. (Just keep it under two hours at the longest, please.) The trailer is posted all over on YouTube if you’re interested. Anyway, Monday. Yay.

  • I never knew I wanted to see Kong fight Mechagodzilla until I saw that trailer.

Also, Godzilla better win in this. Like he did in the original. (Oh, he won in the original. Don’t let ’em tell you otherwise…)

It and the new ‘Dune’ are the only recent movies I have any interest in seeing. I will go see it in the theater if available- and there are any local theaters still open. Not sure I want to subscribe to HBO for just two films. Of course I might just buy it on Blu-Ray since I’m pretty sure I’ll like it.

I did think the little girl bonding with Kong was a little odd. Bonding with small children – that’s MY thing!

  • Beckoning Chasm

I thought Warners was not going to release anything in theaters this year.

  • I hope this doesn’t wind up like Batman vs. Superman….

  • Gamera977

Well in that case I guess I don’t have to look for an open theater… (sigh)…

BTW: Watched ‘The Kitsune’ episode on ‘Wartime Stories’ on Youtube over the weekend. As the name would suggest it’s normally a military history series but this is a Vietnam veteran’s encounter with something near the US base in Okinawa Japan not quite human. Would recommend it- it’s one of the most creepy things I’ve heard in sometime.

  • The Rev.

Well of course he did. They ended up in the water. Godzilla’ amphibious; Kong isn’t. Kong had to flee, and Godzilla was tuckered out by all the fighting and let him go, deciding to take a nap. Until a tsunami washed him ashore, along with a certain someone’s egg…SEE IT ALL FITS PEOPLE!

  • Kirk

Oh… Oh my… This can’t get here soon enough.

  • Kong: “Save…..Mothra!”
Godzilla: “WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!”

  • Ken_Begg

As I understand it, they are co-releasing films same day to (short) theatrical runs and also for free (i.e., at no extra cost to subscribers) on their streaming service. The question is how many theaters will be around by then to go to.

  • Ken_Begg

    Ha!

  • Rock Baker

I guess I’m in the minority here, I just find it really hard to care. Granted, that probably has more to do with KING OF THE MONSTERS than anything else. I enjoyed the movie, until I watched the extra features and was disturbed out of detached enjoyment. It was like listening to a bunch of nine year olds who had dedicated a church to a movie dinosaur….

And then there’s the fact that I rather like the heroic take on Godzilla. In that light, I feel sorta cheated. (Yes, I figured all along that Kong would be the favored boy in the bout, but I never cared for hero-gone-bad stories all that much.) I have a feeling it’ll be a far more pleasant experience to dig out an old print of THE TERROR OF GODZILLA and just watch that. The scene where Godzilla braves a barrage that actually sets him on fire, just to get close to his enemy and start wailing, is such a classic Hero moment that it never fails to excite.

I wondered if that was a nod to the Rankin/Bass cartoon series. I kept waiting for someone to caller her Susan Bond and confirm it.

  • I think, much like in Godzilla v. Mechagodzilla, they’re going with Godzilla being framed for an attack he didn’t cause. If you watch real carefully at the start of the trailer, during the scene with people running downstairs you’ll see in the sky above them something that looks very much like Mechagodzilla. I think that Little Miss Stranger Tales storyline is her trying to prove Godzilla wasn’t responsible.

  • Jamie B.

I have hope for this movie.

  • Eric Hinkle

A kitsune in Vietnam? Okay, I gotta check this one out.

  • Eric Hinkle

Like so many others, I’ve really got hopes for this film. Not that I have very high standards — give me 90-120 minutes of Kong and Godzilla devastating cities as they pound on each other and I’ll be happy.

  • Gamera977

Well, actually it’s at a bar near the US military base in Okinawa, Japan where the vet was based before he deployed to Vietnam. The guy notices weird stuff going on with some of the Japanese ‘working girls’.

    Yeah, Kitsune hookers….

  • The Rev.

Same here. The first was only okay, but I quite enjoyed Skull Island and KotM. This looks like it will be fun, which is ultimately what I want. I do wish I could take the niece and nephew to see it like I did KotM but unless they move the release back to the summer that won’t be happening.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve read Japanese stories, as in stories from and set in Japan, that have much the same thing going on. Given the legendary lustfulness of the kitsune it sounds like something they’d do. If they existed, that is.

  • Eric Hinkle

Having now looked at it, I am left desolate that we no longer have hour-long shows like ‘Tales from the Darkside’ or ‘The Twilight Zone’. ‘The Kitsune’ would make a perfect episode for one of them.

  • Gamera977

It would! Though I like the format, with it and it’s more horror related sister channel ‘Bedtime Stories, I love the sketches. Having about a dozen or so with each episode that’s a lot of work involved.

  • Eric Hinkle

I really do like their ‘Bedtime Stories’ channel too. I’ve always been fascinated with that sort of weirdness and they do a good job with it.
