Monster of the Day #3148

First of all, great poster. I love that style.

Second of all, and I’m serious here, is this poster gay-baiting? I mean, given the film’s tagline (on the poster), the expressions on their faces, etc.  Of course, Dracula’s Daughter was the first movie to really bring that issue to the forefront.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I dunno about gay baiting, but I’m wondering what exactly it is that the guy is clambering over. Is he throwing himself overboard?

  • Gamera977

I’d probably have more of an issue with getting it on with Drac being necrophilia…

  • Gamera977

I love the poster, the bold vibrant colours and uncluttered simple style would draw my eye in a theater lobby.

  • Lugosi in this is something else. It’s not his best film–I think White Zombie takes that crown–but you can see why it made its mark. Essential stuff for Horror buffs.

That’s what was so instructive when the concurrent Spanish language version of Dracula came out. Really, it’s better in nearly every way, but Lugosi’s absence leaves a huge gaping hole in things. It really points out how important he is to Browning’s film.

  • Lisa M Sheets

I love the poster, the way the guy looks like he’s trying to climb out of it…..

Mom and I watched “Return of Dracula” last weekend, I thought you might enjoy her comments.

( During the last 10 minutes, there is a climactic scene where the Wolf man and Dracula traverse the graveyard and finally come to a building where they have a final interaction. The Dracula character forsakes the WolfMan and leaves him to die. Wolfman scrapes around in the dirt, finds a crucifix and takes it over and holds it in front of Dracula, who recoils from it in pain! He is clearly repelled by the cross.)

Mom says: “They just traipsed through the graveyard, and there were a ton of crosses all over the place there. The crosses didn’t seem to bother Dracula there…. It makes no sense!”

    On point, mom!

Sorry Ken I am new here and awkward at navigating this site. I came because I want to keep in touch.

Lisa Sheets!!! How are you? Is all well your Mom and Julie and Tim and everyone else? (Sorry, folks, Lisa was a pal of mine back in high school. She used to drive some of us around in her horse-drawn carriage, as was the fashion of the day at that time.)

Lisa, just to be a dick after you were nice enough to visit, but I must correct you (I’m a nerd, it’s in a genetic imperative), you’re referring to the very fun Return of the Vampire with Lugosi; Return of Dracula was a later film, and not a horrible one. It thrills me to think of you and your Mom watching old horror movies. And yes, the ten year old me (body very different, intellect and maturity not so much) was bothered by that exact same thing.

Thank you for coming by. My email if ken@jabootu.com if you’d rather converse that way, but it’s great to have you here. Merry Christmas (next week!) and Happy New Year.

  • Rodford Smith

Some variations on the folklore say it’s the faith that’s important. Without faith, a crucifix is just a shape.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, I’m pretty sure Stephen King was the first one to use that trope in Salem’s Lot, and you’re right, that idea falls just in line with what I was talking about.
