Monster of the Day #3133

Before there was Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, there was Ghost Table. I mean…that’s great. What were the rest of the stories like that this was the one picked to be on the cover. I mean, Lovecraft, Seabury Quinn….

She looks more like she just finds the table so tacky.

Not sure if you should hire a priest or an interior decorator…

  • Gamera977

Him: ‘The table is cursed and tried to kill me!!!’

Her: ‘More importantly it doesn’t match the rest of the furniture!!!!!’

  • An early “McMansion Hell”……

Considering that the Lovecraft in this issue was “The Call of Cthulhu,” maybe Mr. O’Donnell slipped the art director a couple of bucks….

  • Now I need to read “Ghost Table” to see if it even comes close…

  • Wikisource has the issue, reprinting this fella as well as several other stories from the issue. Looks like it was the issue’s first story, followed by Call of Cthulhu. Most interesting.

As for the story It’s… okay? I guess? Definitely not in Call of Cthulhu‘s league. Or a whole lot of other writers. It was readable, it was mildly entertaining, but worthy of the first spot? The cover? I dunno.

It does pay to remember that Weird Tales didn’t really ‘get’ how good Lovecraft was until after he’d died. Elliott O’Donnell, on the other hand, had a long list of publishing credits and an established audience that’d read anything he wrote. I admit, he wasn’t the world’s greatest writer but it you like creepy stories presented with an air of total sincerity he’s pretty good.

Him: “We must stay away from the table, it’s deadly!”

Her: “You know, I really thought it would look good over there. Could you move it back to the other side of the room?”
