Monster of the Day #3119

So we finished the day shift with our traditional TV/shorts/quiz slot. Sandy showed the first episode of Gerry Anderson’s Stingray (above), while I showed the episode of Manimal where Simon MacCorklandale exhibiting some highly dubious kung fu skills. James Hong is there and is given nothing to do. The scene where MacCorklandale buffs his martial arts prowess overnight by watching footage of animals is hilarious. I also showed via YouTube an episode of Sukeban Deka. This features a high school girl JD who if forced to do undercover work armed only with her amazing steel Yo-Yo. It’s great, if you want to watch some episodes on YouTube check out the Cue Media posts, although they start with ten or fifteen minutes of music and stuff, so you’ll need to fast forward to get to the shows. Worth it though.

I’ve never seen Stingray, but I used to get up really early on Saturday to watch Supercar.

I watched ‘Mamimal’ as a kid. I thought it was a pretty cool TV show. Now everyone talks about how awful it was. I’m afraid to go back and revisit the series. Somehow what you thought was great at ten years old doesn’t always match what you think is cool now.
I’m going to have to look up ‘Sukeden Deka’, that sounds awesomely insane! Is it live-action or anime?

  • The Rev.

It’s a live-action show. It’s pretty great. Which reminds me…I can share this with you all and also Ken, who I told I’d get this info to!

If you have a Roku, there is a streaming channel called The B-Zone. They run the first two seasons of Sukeban Deka at 6 p.m. CST Monday through Friday. In fact, I think they’re about to wrap up another run of the second season tonight, and it’s popular enough that I imagine he’ll just start again with the beginning of the first season on Friday (or possibly Monday if he decides to take a day off and start afresh next week). They have a Facebook page and a Twitter account (@BZone2020) where he posts the daily schedules, usually before noon.

They also play a similar show called “Shoujo Commando Izumi” which Ken was interested in; that runs on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. CST. Sadly, it looks like they just restarted last night with the first episode, although to be fair it’s not hard to pick up.

When I was a youth, I watched the Adam West Batman show and I took it absolutely seriously. When I saw some of the episodes as an adult, I was kind of appalled by my earlier naivety.

  • Gamera977

Thanks Rev! I’ve got a Roku box and will give that a try!

  • Rock Baker

Big fan of Stingray. I’m sure it’s one of the models I use for writing. Without doubt it was a kiddie show, but it’s concerns were always in adult matters like duty, courage, and espionage.

I watched ‘Manimal’ myself and enjoyed it for all its cheesiness. I thought it was fun; then again, I enjoyed ‘The Charmings’ and ‘Jennifer Slept Here’, the show with Ann Jillian as a ghost. Of course for the last I had the excuse that the show starred Ann Jillian — hey, I thought she was gorgeous!

  • Eric Hinkle

I was a fan myself as a boy, mostly because of Batgirl. Even before I paid attention to girls, I noticed her.

  • I thought I was the only one who remembered “Jennifer Slept Here”, much less with fondness.

  • Eric Hinkle

It wasn’t great TV, but I enjoyed it. Mostly as I said, because I thought Miss Jillian was a very lovely lady. And a better performer than some gave her credit for.

Are there regional channels on Roku? I looked around Friday and ‘The B-Zone’ didn’t come up at all. Closest thing I could find is a ‘B-Movie Channel’.

  • The Rev.

Hmmm…no, it’s not regional; the guy that runs it is in Canada and I watch it just fine, as do others across the U.S. Maybe just try “B-Zone”? If you still don’t find it I’ll see what I can find out to help you. You may also want to check their Twitter or Facebook for info.

  • Gamera977

Hmmm, thanks! I’ll check again. Halloween hit and I kinda forgot about it.
