Monster of the Day #3084

Back in the day the first (and for many, many years the only) slasher film I’d seen was Humongous. It was playing at one of my friend’s houses when our crowd was hanging out, so I kind of got stuck watching it. It did not endear to the breed, that’s for sure. It was a mean, ugly film and I kind of hated it. So I have no idea if it has a better reputation among fans of that sort of thing. Maybe Good Bad Flix will make an Exploring video about it. Anyway, for those who are less prissy than I am, it’s available for a watch on YouTube.

Wow — an early 80s slasher I have never even heard of? See, this is why we keep coming back, Ken… :-)

However. Reading the quick synopsis on IMDB and looking at some reviews, it looks like many had the same reaction you did…

Not big on slasher type movies either.

If I may venture a little off subject I was on vacation last week. About the same time Ken posted ‘Beaks’ as MotD I was at the zoo looking at a flock of flamingos. Which made me wonder- has there ever been a killer animal movie about a flock of flamingos? I submit ‘FANGMINGO: PINK PINIONS OF PERIL!!!’ A family moves to Florida and is worried about gators… until the terrifying encounter with FANGMINGO!!!

  • No, you are absolutely right – this one is nasty, brutish, and not nearly short enough.

  • “It’s not the crustaceans that give them their color!”

  • Yeah, I’d never heard of this either.

    That needs to be filmed!

Talking weird ‘animal attacks’ stories, did anyone else here ever read a novel about a killer orca (trained by the US Navy, of course) that has a herd/pack/whatever of killer walruses show up at one point? It’s more dangerous than it sounds. The people in the book are trapped on an ice floe.

I’d heard of it, but didn’t see it because I’d heard the print was so bad you could barely see anything during the many night scenes (plus it wasn’t supposed to be that good). I saw it a couple of years ago because some madman remastered it. It’s a bit nastier than the average slasher, which is about the only memorable thing to it. Well, that, and the pre-credits sequence, which features an actor that would be very important to Jabootu that same decade…

Not only have I heard of it, but I wrote a review of it for Lyz a few years ago! It’s called “Orca,” by Peter Tonkin, and if you don’t want to read my review, I’ll say it was quite good and worth finding (I got it dirt cheap from Amazon). If you do want to read the review, it’s under the “Random film stuff” page on her site.

  • Eric Hinkle

Hey, thanks! I’d gladly read your review if I knew where it was.

*Pause* Never mind, you actually said where it is.

  • Eric Hinkle

One correction. Looking at it on Amazon, they list the title as ‘Killer’. And it must’ve gotten more expensive since you bought a copy, the cheapest one is going for $27.

I had a brain cramp apparently; it is indeed “Killer.” My bad! I did have a moment where I kind of paused when I typed it, but I remembered the author’s name no problem so I guess I just went with it.

As for the price…I have no explanation for that. It was only a few bucks when I got it. That’s kind of crazy, honestly, that it would go up that much in a couple of years.
