Monster of the Day #3034

I learned last night that the fine folks at Arrow Video are putting out Gamera the Complete Collection this summer, a set to rival or even surpass Criterion’s recent Godzilla set. The price is hefty, of course ($130 on Amazon), but you get 13 movies on 8 discs, with the Japanese and American language tracks, tons of video extras including some commentaries and such, and two books, an 80 page history of the Gamera movies and a 120 page graphic novel. So bang for buck-wise, it’s a pretty fair price.

Those on a budget can watch several of the old Gamera in less splendor for free, however, on YouTube.

Well, I own multiple copies of each. I guess I can always pick them up again…

Thanks for the head’s up Ken!

I liked the three recent Gamera films. The rest…well, I shall hold my tongue in honor of Mr. 977!

I’m mostly curious as to what they’ll be putting in that 120-page graphic novel.

  • Gamera977

Lol, I love the Showa movies- they’re without a doubt ‘so bad they’re good’. Gosh they’re awful but so much fun.

Only one that I can’t say much for is ‘Gamera: Super Monster’ where three Japanese super-heroines square off against a knock-off Star Destroyer and Gammy appears in a bunch of stock footage. It’s a weird one.

Best Buy has it listed for the same price as Amazon. But I do get free shipping with Amazon Prime.

The best part of year’s B-Fest was that they showed Gamera vs Guiron. FoJ Liz, as it turns out, had never seen a Gamera movie before and in the very best kind of hysterics during the scene where Gurion chops up Space Gaos. Sadly, it was the heavily edited print, so she didn’t even see the scene in anywhere near all its glory.

  • Ken_Begg

I think it’s a reprint of a previous series or two. From the video I saw, it looked like the main collection features Gamera fighting all his classic era foes.

I have an Amazon card, so I’ll even get a 5% credit.

One hundred thirty bucks? That’s more than the BUDGET for some of those Gamera flicks.

  • bgbear_rnh

I don’t need to see it, I lived it!

  • bgbear_rnh

The newer kid’s film “Gamera the Brave” is cute and entertaining.

  • Beckoning Chasm

The one’s I meant were offered for a time for $5 at WalMart for a three film blue-ray set. It contained “Attack of Legion,” “Return of Isis” and the first one of that series. Of the other Gamera films, again, I refuse to comment.

  • bgbear_rnh

I know which ones you mean, best Kaiju since the original Godzilla films. I just think the GTB is also worth seeing.

  • Eric Hinkle

Hah! I saw the AIP version of that one as a kid. When I finally saw the original Japanese version with multicolored blood and guts flying everywhere, yow! I can see why it was edited so heavily.

Weird thing though, I do remember seeing the two older Daimajin movies on local TV as a boy, and the scene with the wicked samurai getting impaled remained in all its glory. Why that was okay to show but monsters getting sliced up wasn’t is beyond me.

  • Ken_Begg

Hard to believe you’d ever need to replace that set, though.

  • Gamera977

Well, Guiron has a Ginsu knife for a nose, shoots shuriken from it’s head, and is the pet of two brain-eating Japanese space babes. I want to know what the heck the designers were smoking when they came up with this.

On second thought no. No, I don’t want to know…

  • Gamera977

Actually ‘Gamera the Brave’ I still haven’t seen.

  • Gamera977

ROTFL… you can say that again!!!
