Monster of the Day #3031

In Bill Warren’s absolutely essential survey of 1950s sci-fi films, Keep Watching the Skies!, he actually continues to cover films from the first couple of years of the 1960s because they’re fundamentally ’50s’ films in spirit.  1961’s Phantom Planet proves his argument. It’s wonky and a bit dull but really feels like a ’50s flick. It also features a young Richard Kiel as one of the dog-faced aliens. He’s wearing a mask, of course, but you’ll know him from his height. The film is premiering on the Cult Cinema Classics on YouTube this weekend.

OK, now that’s just some FINE costume work there. How ever did they do it on a budget?

I’ve seen the MST3K version about a zillion times but not sure I’ve ever seen the non-riffed version.

I remember this one was really talky. And there was a wrestling match over a disintegrator plate.

You know, Captain, every year of my life, I become more and more convinced that the wisest and the best is to focus our attention on the good and the beautiful, if we just take the time to look at it.

Larry Blamire once put forth that the era of 50’s science fiction fully extends to around 1964. His candidate for the last 50’s genre picture is that year’s THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH.

Well, I just took the time to look at that monster suit and I didn’t see much beauty there.

  • Ericb

Well, the character who said that was dead at that point.
