Monster of the Day #3026

FoJ Gamera977 suggested Sector 7. There was a time (I’m sure I’ve said this before) when I looked at my thousands of DVDs and Blu Rays and thought, why did I bother. Everything’s on streaming. That’s not true, though. I know Sector 7 used to be available somewhere, but now it’s not on Amazon Prime or Netflix or Hulu. You can rent it for $3 on Amazon, though, so that’s pretty reasonable.

Quoth Gamera: “the movie is basically the Korean version of ‘Deepstar 6’ aka a crew of wildcatters on an oil rig platform go up against a nasty sea monster. Good film if not great, my only real issue is you could cut about twenty minutes out of it- I was tempted to yell at the screen ‘Please monster just DIE already!”

I will say that a lot of Korean films do seem long to me, although then you have something like Parasite which is perfect.

Thanks Ken! And it was included in Amazon Prime back when I watched it at the beginning of the year. I checked before I sent the email and yes it had been removed.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Funny how streaming is doing the old broadcast thing–“Oh, you didn’t watch Wild Wild West on Tuesday? You’ll just have to wait for the rerun this summer.” I assume it’s a licensing/rights issue in the new case.

  • Ken_Begg

I imagine you buy the rights for like a year or whatever, and then (especially with library titles) you let them go because the majority of people where were going to watch it on your platform have already done so. So you’re better off buying the rights to another old movie for a year rather than sticking with the original one.

  • Rock Baker

I’d rather have the disks, honestly, but then I’ve always been a collector. The main reason I never got on board any streaming services was the simple fact that you couldn’t tape anything. I’d rather have the physical items, so I can watch whatever I want whenever I want to.

  • Ericb

Thank you. And I feel the same way about music as well. When I visit my brother he shows me how many entertainment options he has access to but there are often problems playing them. I grew up with physical media and I like the idea of having a physical library of the of the music and movies I love.

  • Rock Baker

Maybe it’s because I grew up with physical stuff, but real tapes, photos, records, books, etc feel more permanent to me. Digital files seem all too vulnerable to being destroyed, so I would never trust them when I could have the real thing. I’ve never understood, for example, those who use their celphones to take pictures but never print said pictures out. But then, I’m not tied to a celphone to begin with, so letting one control such aspects of my life remains an alien concept to me.

  • Eric Hinkle

What I love are the looks you get when you say you don’t own a cellphone. “B-b-but how do you even function on a daily basis?!?” XD

  • Gamera977

Yeah, streaming is okay but I consider it as basically renting or borrowing something from the library. I only consider it as ‘owning’ if I have it on actual hardcopy aka CD, DVD, whatever.

I have a bunch of PC games on the other hand as downloadables on GoG and Steam though. Don’t ask me why I don’t ask for physical copies there.

  • The Rev.

I actually haven’t seen this because I recall Keith over at Teleport really disliked it. Maybe I should give it a shot?

Yeah, Parasite and The Host both surprised me with how long they were, which I only realized after the fact as I was quite engaged during their runtime.

  • Gamera977

Did I love it- no. Did I like it- yes. I’d rate it about 2.5-3 stars out of 5. I thought it’s a fun romp. And the lead actress (shown in the photo) is really cute.

Then again I have strange taste in movies. I think I’m the only one here that loves ‘Pacific Rim’ for example.

  • You know, I’ve seen Pacific Rim. Got into a lively debate about it with my brothers afterwards. I even remember a good portion of the flick. I just couldn’t tell you if I liked it or not. I have no desire to see it again, which might be telling. Then again there’s a certain flick I know I don’t wanna ever see again that has a little pull for me for some reason, so perhaps not.

  • kgb_san_diego

I’m with you on Pacific Rim. Goofy? Yes. Hackneyed plot? Sure. But does my heart just soar every time I think “Giant robots fighting Kaiju”? Oh yes it does.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, I’m the guy that spent a $150 bucks to get the Criterion set of Godzilla films despite having already previously bought of them in previous editions, so….

  • The Rev.

It’s odd. I saw Pacific Rim in the theater, even paid extra for the 3-D and everything, which I rarely do. It ended up being really great for the monster stuff and I felt it was worth it. Anyway, I enjoyed the movie, although (as is often the case with giant monster movies) the human characters were mostly washouts, which hurt it. However, I haven’t seen it since and I’m not sure why; if nothing else I’m sure the monster stuff is still good even on the small screen. I suppose what I should do is rewatch it, see what I think.

It occurs to me I never saw the sequel, either.

  • kgb_san_diego

Very, VERY few people watched the sequel.

  • Gamera977

And those who did watch the sequel seemed to be mostly Chinese. It bombed pretty much everywhere else.
All in all I thought it was okay in the theater. But the more I watch the Blu-Ray the better I like the film. It differed enough from the original to be interesting but was still loyal to the namesake.
Personally I liked John Boyega as the ‘loose cannon’ and Scott Eastwood (Clint’s son) as the straight-arrow. I thought they had pretty good chemistry together. The biggest gripe I had was writing in a female Wesley Crusher character. Has there ever been a child genius character that the audience actually liked? And there’s another genius character tossed in as it seems to me as a sop to the Chinese audience. Can’t complain, she was a good actress and quite attractive but goes from bad guy to good guy in flash. A scene explaining why would have been nice.
As I said I liked the plot, and the villain made perfect sense. But if you didn’t like the original or thought it was just okay you probably won’t like the sequel.
