Monster of the Day #2091

First of all, I hope everyone is well. I actually braved a theater with a friend yesterday (along with maybe 10 other souls) to see King Kong. I will say that the parking lot for the multiplex was maybe a quarter filled, maybe. 20%? Not great for a Sunday. Still, King Kong. Great movie.

I like this cover because the hero seems to be fighting on those iguana-with-a-fin-glued-on-it dinosaurs that people like Irwin Allen used to give us. Otherwise not exactly a classic cover.

Keep well, everyone. Hopefully this thing blows over soon.

  • Glad you got the chance to see it before things get really locked down. Hope everyone is staying home and staying well. Except for me of course, my patients won’t see themselves. Good times. This month is gonna be interesting.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Yeah, ditto to what Galaxy Jane said–hope everyone is well. Working for the State, I am considered “essential” so I am in a giant building with two other people.

I’m in NYC so I’m going to be living like a hermit for the foreseeable future. All I know is that after this is all done I’m not going to be eating pasta for a while. Keep safe everyone.

  • Ericb

Thank you for the work you are doing. It can’t be easy putting your health on the line every day like this.

  • Eric Hinkle

Out where I live they’ve shut down the schools, public libraries, and the dining rooms of most restaurants — the only ones I’ve seen open are McDonald’s. Oh, and the state liquor stores too for some reason.

In the hopes of distracting everyone briefly, has anyone here ever heard of John LeMay’s ‘The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films: Mutated Edition’? The description given on Amazon makes it sound like a riot — apparently someone considered doing a new DAIMAJIN movie with Steven Seagal(!) facing the giant. They also considered doing a movie with the Adam West Batman versus Godzilla, and a movie about giant rats (GIANT HORDE BEAST NEZURA) that tried to use real-life sewer rats, who overran the studio and shut it down.

It’s on Kindle for $10 which isn’t much given that the book is about 900 pages long.

I work at a small water/wastewater treatment plant in a small town for the local college. Only three of us here so we’re all all here. The college is supposed to be going to online classes only but so far there’s lots of folks on campus.

  • Gamera977

I dunno but it sounds awesome!

  • Gamera977

Thongor prevailed against all opponents expect Conan’s attorneys…

  • There are plenty of cheesy movies (and some good ones, too!) available for free online. I suspect the most difficult part will be staying *psychologically* healthy, as the normal human contacts diminish.

I recommend actually getting on the phone and *calling* people – not just texting or e-mailing them. Hear some friendly voices, since very few of us can sing from our windows…..

I bet trash collectors have to go to work. Salute.

Is that John Romita Jr that did that cover?

I know it’s not one of the covers you prefer but I’m looking at that girl and thinking, change her hair a bit and that’s Mary Jane Watson.

People have to realize, with movies the actors have their own faces, when you’re drawing someone, you need to have a “colorful” costume just to tell everyone apart. Well, there’s my rant.

  • Honestly, I’m not really worried for myself, I’m healthy and unlikely to be in any real danger even if I got infected. The worry is trying to keep from getting an exposure since we are a tiny, resource-poor clinic and I’m basically a solo practitioner with no staff (although there is an MD also, he’s only in 6 hours a week and on days I’m not there). If I get a confirmed exposure, even if I never get sick I will have to stay out for 14 days, which means there is no clinic at all.

We’re encouraging people to call instead of coming in if they are sick, but it’s hard to get folks to change long standing habits of just coming by and sticking their heads in the door whenever they get a sniffle or have a question. It’s a worksite Family Practice/Employee clinic, so basically my patients are right there where they can just wander in. Mostly I love it that way, but not so great during an epidemic.

  • You’re in SW-ish Virginia, right?

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, the nature of my job requires me to actually go to work, but I think they might start sending home all the teams that could possibly work over computers. So I wouldn’t be surprised to be working with 40 people or whatever instead of a 120.

  • Ken_Begg

That’s pretty much true of where I am. All the dine-in restaurants are closed until at least the end of the month, only drive-ins are open. It’s pretty crazy.

  • Ken_Begg

So…a stonier-faced Daimajin? Oh, facing the giant.

  • Ken_Begg

Even in movies, if you have four girls with blonde hair, I start getting lost.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, near Ferrum College- about halfway between Roanoke and Martinsville.

  • I thought it might be Ferrum, I had a couple of medics who were going there back when I was still drilling. I’m still up in Richmond, but my tiny little clinic is in Petersburg, so you can imagine. I’d much rather be out in your part of the state right now.

  • Gamera977

I’m glad to be living in a rural area. Good luck!!!

  • Eric Hinkle

Out here it seems like places such as Sheetz and Wawa are doing much better business than usual, between the incredibly low price of gas and the fact that you can order food at the counter.

And how I HOPE this is only until the end of the month.

  • Eric Hinkle

    Yeah, take care with everything!

  • No worries, I was already a compulsive hand-washer before all this started. Admittedly, right now I think I was safer at work in the Army :D :D

Now I’m wondering if I am going to get recalled!

  • Marsden

    Good point!

  • maggiesmith

Up here groceries, pharmacies, gas stations and liquor stores are open. Restaurants are only doing take -out service. I still see a fair number of people walking or biking past my building. Of course, anyone with a dog needs to walk it, virus or not.
