Monster of the Day #2077

The penultimate movie was Midnight Madness, a one time cable mainstay that inspired the ‘treasure hunts’ my own group of friends ran waaaaay back in high school. Not a great film, but a nice cheerful one. For the last film we (quite nearly) returned to old tradition. Back in the day B-Fest always ended with a Godzilla movie. That has fallen by wayside as time passed, but this way they returned to that general idea by showing Gamera vs Guiron.

Our pal Liz had never seen a Gamera movie before and she literally spent about three straight minutes giggling with delight when the monsters made their appearance (including Space Gaos). It was delightful. The one downnote was that the print we saw was heavily edited with a lot of the monster fights cut down. (????) I don’t think we ever saw Guiron’s ninja stars, for example. Still, it was pretty great.

And so ended B-Fest 2020, a year that will go down as a pretty fun and nearly painless fest after years of ones that were often more bruising. Here’s to B-Fest 2021.

Oh, and T-Fest will be at Sandy’s house (per usual) on April 18th.

The main theme of this film was that traffic accidents are really, really bad, isn’t it?

There was one Gamera film that was made up almost entirely of flashbacks, but I can’t remember who he fought in that one. Maybe the Aztec Mummy.

    Helooooo! Thank you!!!

Poor space Gaos doesn’t have any internal organs, makes for great steaks though.

When I finally saw an uncut version of this film I was stunned to see how grisly it was. I mean, still safe for most kids, but monsters were getting sliced and diced on all sides in this one!

Gamera is the best. Don’t let Gamera know I said that.

More than one has a chunk of flashbacks, but Gamera: Super Monster is probably the one you’re thinking of, as we get footage from ALL SEVEN PREVIOUS MOVIES. I mean, it’s mostly the monster fights, so I guess that’s not the worst thing, but they are severely truncated. In between, we get three “superheroes” that do nothing the entire movie because there’s a Star Destroyer waiting to zap them when they transform, and it has one of the more annoying Kennys. Oh, and at a couple of points we get footage from a couple of anime because why the hell not? It’s…yeah, it’s bad.

I can’t believe how much they chopped out of the movie…and the monster fights, no less! That sucked so much. I’d love to sponsor one of these in the future (Gamera vs. Gaos would be ideal), but I’d want to make sure they got a full version.

Nonetheless, Liz’s utter joy with the movie made me very happy.

Oh — and yes, the kid keeps talking about how he hopes we can get rid of wars and traffic accidents. Methinks meknows what happened to his dad…

We watched this one at the first T-Fest, right?
