Monster of the Day #2071

OK, I had to return to the living someday, unfortunately. Even worse, I have to return to work and have a TON of work to catch up to due to a month long SNAFU from before I took off for B-Fest. So I’ll be working Saturday all day too I fear.

On the other hand, B-Fest 2020, after some rough rides in recent years, went down very smoothly. There was some kind of major line-up shake-up just before the event, and from those who looked at the line-ups it was apparently a good thing, given that it reduced the number of “bad comedies,” which have been the bane of the Fest in recent years.

We kicked things off strongly with the crowd-pleasing Killer Klowns from Outer Space, a film with one of the greatest themes songs of all time, courtesy of The Dickies. It’s a one-joke affair, but man, they milk that joke like nobodies business. It also featured a nice turn by John Vernon, who I realized was basically the Kurtwood Smith of his day. If you had switched the actor out you would have gotten pretty much the exact same performance.

You know, Imgur used to have actual editing functions, but now you just just crop photos and change their side. I wonder what’s up with that.

Yeah, Killer Klowns is a fun film. Good example of a really terrible screenplay being saved by special effects. As for Imgur, they probably have a paid service with full editing capabilities and they want people to use that, rather than the free one.

Glad to hear everything went well. I hope you get caught up at work soon.

I unconditionally love this movie. The only way it could be improved is if you did a cross-over where Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers took on the Klowns you’d have the most perfect movie ever…

Glad to have you back. I caught the end of a Jabootu worthy entry a few days ago on comet: the 1999 Beowulf with Christopher Lambert. The wikipedia entry even quotes Nathan Shumate! And several good MOTD’s here, too.

I was surprised when I first saw this movie to realize how much goofy fun it is. And good luck with the job.

This was filmed in Santa Cruz and even at the Boardwalk (amusement park)when I worked there, but I have no idea when. I was not asked to help run rides or turn on lights etc for this one. Have only seen parts.

I’m pretty sure I have the ‘pro’ account with Imgur, since I am keeping so many photos there.

Watching UNDER SIEGE 2, I felt Kurtwood Smith could easily be this generation’s Morris Ankrum. If they still made movies that required Morris Ankrum types, anyway.

One of the finest 80’s monster movies, and a good example of why the period was a good last gasp for fun drive-in movies. You could still take a wacky idea and play it straight. The result is one of the more effectively creepy monster movies of the period. I remember the first time I saw it during my high school days. The scene where Dave is inspecting the interior of the jeep webbed with cotton candy fibers had me on the edge of my seat. I was actually talking to the screen “Get back in the squad car, Dave. Get back in the squad car!”

It might be they are generally scaling back, then. Most changes to websites and services aren’t really forward moves. (Look at the awful new IMDB front page, for example.)

    That would be superawsome!
