Monster of the Day #2066

There are a couple of channels on YouTube that have posted The Abominable Dr. Phibes, I think the sharpest copy is the one posted by Pit Stop 1969. I’m not sure of the legality of some of these posts, so I’m sure they get pulled down occasional, but this copy has been up for four years now. I first saw the original Phibes at a drive-in when I was a kid, and it’s great. I’d probably slightly give the edge to Theatre of Blood, but Phibes is great as well.

There’s also a good copy of the sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, posted. Both on YouTube.

I’m glad you brought up the thing with this movie and Theater of Blood here, a week before I get to Chicago, so there’s time to cool off. I’d hate to have another house-wrecking fistfight with you about which is slightly better than the other. Sandy still won’t let me even mention Vincent Price in his presence.

  • Now here’s a cool cat we won’t see often on MotD. Price had very few monsters in his resume, and at least one we wouldn’t see.

I’m in the Theater of Blood is the better movie camp, though it might be because I’ve seen it more recently. Also, Diana Rigg.

  • Beckoning Chasm

They’re very similar movies and I like them both. I’m lukewarm on the Phibes sequel, though.

  • Eric Hinkle

I always get confused by one thing about at least the first Phibes movie. Was he just scarred or actually undead?

  • Gamera977

No idea. I thought horribly scarred but alive, but there are parts that did make me wonder if he wasn’t undead.

  • Gamera977

I’d be tempted to give a slight nod to this one simply because of how Price had to act though body language while being unable to use his face or voice.

  • I dunno. Price quoting Shakespeare cares a lot of weight, too…

  • Ken_Begg

Uh, we, uh, respect your opinion, Rev, which is, er, completely valid, and….well, bless your heart, Rev. Bless your heart.

(Turns away, one tear running down)

  • Ken_Begg

I mean, if the argument is as to which film is a 10, and which a 9.5, well, both movies were doing something right. That Diana Rigg thing does tip it for me too, though.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, as a kid I thought it crossed the line into nasty and that killed some of its appeal for me.

  • In “Theatre”, you get to see Price playing a hammy actor playing several different roles. It really shows the diversity of his acting talent.

  • The Rev.

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand SCENE!!

  • zombiewhacker

Though some of the deaths depicted within were ingeniously staged, overall I found the sequel to be extremely mean-spirited, and that ultimately turned me off, too.

  • Ken_Begg

He does the same in the really weird Noir flick His Kind of Woman and it’s GREAT.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, I haven’t seen it since I was a kid, and that scene with the guy being compacted still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Also, as with John Wick or Halloween, the first film has this wonderfully simple through line, and the sequel inevitably as to open things up and the core concepts can never be as strong.
