Varan the Unbelievable is no classic, but hey, it’s free on Amazon Prime. I think the only only Toho giant monster movie there is Space Ameba (aka Yog Monster from Space). You could do worse, certainly.

  • Poor Varan. Never gets the respect he’s due. Never gets to fight Godzilla. Just sort of… is.

    I need something stupid to watch right now, is this stupid enough or should I hold out for a better option.

    The original Japanese version (which I have on DVD) isn’t too bad. It definitely has its fun moments.

    Say Ken, you’ve covered Gold Key comics here before. Have you ever done any of the covers from Tragg and the Sky Gods? If not, you may have some worthy material awaiting you.

    I thought it was a Toho film too. He did have a few cameos in their films. As I understand the suit had gotten so ratty and worn they didn’t want to put him front and center.

    Yeah, I thought it was… okay. Not really a great kaiju film but nothing I really hated either. I thought ‘Space Ameba’ was slightly better though- if you have Prime they’d make a great double bill.

    Varan has a nice showy part in GODZILLA: BATTLE ROYAL. That’s actually my brother playing him, in fact.

    Despite my love of giant monsters, I’ve never finished this movie. The few times I’ve started watching, at some point I got bored and either turned it off or fell asleep. It’s been quite a while since I last tried (probably about 15 years ago), and I’ve seen so much worse in the meantime, so maybe this is my chance to get this knocked out.
