Monster of the Day #2051

Looking for something to watch on New Year’s Eve on Amazon Prime? Ha, you’re thinking that’s only me with such lame plans for New Year’s Eve. But you’re wrong.

I’ll be watching anime.

If I were to watch a movie, though, and was too lazy to walk to my shelves and actually insert my DVD, I could certainly do worse than to ring in the New Year with Ro-Man.

I wonder what reputation this film would have if the costume was a more standard “robot” one. He wouldn’t be able to wave his arms and shake his fists as he does (I don’t think any 50’s robots had much range of movement). But maybe it would sit on the shelf next to “Target Earth” or something.

Personally I don’t drink but I was thinking earlier about a guy of Chinese descent who told me that one of the perks of being Chinese/American is it gave him an excuse to get drunk on Western New Year and again on Chinese New Year.

  • Gamera977

Hell, I’d love to see a send-up of Star Wars where C3P0 was replaced by Ro-Man!

  • Beckoning Chasm

Minion from “Megamind” is very clearly modeled on Ro-Man.

  • I plan to celebrate by going to bed early and getting a good night’s sleep. I’m a rebel, I tell you!

  • Gamera977

I’m loving all the crazy stuff you can find on Amazon Prime, I missed it with Netflix. Last night I watched a hour long show about five amazing Christmas themed ‘O’ gauge model railroad layouts.

    Why stop in between?

  • bgbear_rnh

I usually do the same even though it is a certain someone special’s birthday.

  • Gamera977

Ok, one more thing and I’ll shut up. Picked the Criterion Showa Godzilla Blu-Ray Collection as a Christmas present to myself. It’s a hell of a collection- the booklet is over a foot/30cm tall with full-colour illustrations for each movie. The Blu-Rays are snugged into the back cover.

I posted three photos of mine on the forum.

A bit over a hundred bucks but IMHO worth it!

  • Eric Hinkle

Congratulations! I am officially dying of jealousy right now.

How I wish Criterion did that set in DVD format as well.

  • Rock Baker

The last couple of years I’ve started a tradition of watching time travel movies on New Year’s Eve. It’s been a fun ride, with the likes of THE TIME MACHINE, CYBORG 2087, and the like!

  • Ditto on the dying of jealousy! Holy heck that’s amazing.

  • Yes it is. A little hard to store with my other discs, but it is nice.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I remember thinking that The Terminator isn’t so much based on Ellison’s “Soldier” as it was on Cyborg 2087.

  • Rock Baker

Indeed. Every time I see CYBORG 2087 it’s hard not to think of it as THE TERMINATOR 1967.

Nothing new under the sun. Do you know someone made a film about a ship called the Titanic sinking before “Titanic”? ;-)

  • Eric Hinkle

A film or a book? I know about the book titled ‘The Wreck of the Titan; or, Futility’.

  • bgbear_rnh

Yes, I heard of that one.

Well, I was just trying to make fun of people who thought Titanic was just a movie (or the opposite, that Jack and Rose were real) and instead I made myself the fool ;-)

  • Eric Hinkle

Oops, sorry I ruined the joke.

  • Eric Hinkle

I may not have the chance later, so Happy New Year, everyone!

And Jabootu seems to be giving us all a gift, too, given that Variety is running an article on the projected $100 million loss that ‘Cats’ is shaping up to be.

  • bgbear_rnh

No problem, story of my life ;-)

  • Gamera977

    Indeed, Happy New Year everyone!!!

  • bgbear_rnh

I am not sure if I already said it here, but if cats resembled the creatures in that film, no one would ever let them near their homes.

  • bgbear_rnh

You two too and everyone else see a great 2020.

  • Gamera977

Terminator always made me think of Phillip K. Dick’s ‘Second Variety’. Which was made into a movie too- the one with Peter Weller, not the killer fishman one.

  • Gamera977

Makes me think of the Lovecraft story ‘The Cats of Ulthar’ only much more frightening.

They should make a stage play and movie called ‘Turtles’…

  • Gamera977

I’ve been laying it flat on the shelf above my other DVDs.

  • Happy New Year! And boy am I glad 2019 is behind us.

  • Happy New Year!

  • The Rev.

I stayed up until midnight on NYE, only to realize I had no earthly idea why. I wasn’t with anyone, or at a party, or anything. I guess just force of habit.

Anyway, Happy New Year to you all.

  • The Rev.

Sandy showed me his copy, and I was like, “Okay, making that purchase ASAP.”

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, Amazon Prime has definitely become a great weird crap resource.

  • Ken_Begg

It’s a great set, although mine is still wrapped in plastic, because….I don’t know. Criterion is going heavily in sets, now, which is interesting. They will be releasing a set of spectucular Jean-Pierre Melville French gangster movies at some point, and I just saw their YouTube ad for a 16 or 18 films Sci-fi of the ’70s collection. Kind of a mixed bag, but a lot of films and what imagine will be a pretty good price point on a film by film basic.

I was out cold by 10PM
