Monster of the Day #2046

I don’t think Amazon Prime has a lot of Hammer stuff, but they do have at least two later vampire films, the obscure but phantasmagorical Vampire Circus and the boob-obsessed (even for Hammer) Twins of Evil.

I watched ‘Vampire Circus’ a few months ago and frankly to be honest it put me to sleep. It’s got Lalla Ward (the second lady Doctor) and David Prowse (Darth Vader) as the circus strongman but still couldn’t keep my interest. A lot of Hammer’s later exploitative stuff just bores me.

I picked up Shout Factory’s new Blu-Ray of ‘The Abominable Snowman’ last week and it’s a great film. There is a commentary on the disk though where the critic is going on about how great Hammer’s plots were as compared to the cheap exploitative American films of the same period. I had to think that either the guy hadn’t seen Hammer’s last few films or was a bit biased…

  • Far too little Hammer stuff, if you ask me. And the Universal flicks for that matter. But that’s always been the case with the streaming services. One wonders if it’s because of the age of the films, or how much the right holders are asking for said films. (Or a combination of the two.)

  • Wade Harrell

The latter, I’m betting! They know those movies still have a fanbase that might stop buying the DVDs if they were available streaming,

  • Rock Baker

Actually, TWINS OF EVIL is considerably less anatomy oriented than the previous two films in the loosely connected series. Sure, the Collison twins’ features are highlighted, but it’s far less nudity-driven than either THE VAMPIRE LOVERS or LUST FOR A VAMPIRE.

Exclusive contracts, I would imagine. TCM probably holds the rights to a lot of stuff. Warners through Seven Arts released a lot of the early films here and retains the American rights, and they are planning to eventually start their own streaming service, so….

Since we all agree Hammer Film went downhill somewhere along the way, what do you think was the *last* great flick the studio put out?

  • bgbear_rnh

I think the transparent night gowns the twins wore is something I’ll never forget.

  • That I hadn’t considered. In any case, it sounds like if I want the good stuff, I probably should look into purchase over streaming.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, with my trailer crammed with thousands of DVDs (and a comparative smattering of Blu Rays), I can’t really argue with that. Expensive, though.

  • Ken_Begg

    True.

  • Ken_Begg

I’d have to look at the release schedule, but Captain Kronos is pretty great.

  • Gamera977

Yeah Captain Kronos was a great little film. I’m not sure what I’d call the cut off date. It’s just I’d rather watch one of their movies from the ’50s or ’60s than the ’70s.

I watched ‘Twins of Evil’ last night and I enjoyed it much more than ‘Vampire Circus’. I think it had a more focused plot for one thing. However; I guess I’m a bit of a hypocrite- I gripe about wanting to see something more original but then I prefer the more traditional vampire movie ‘Twins’ over the more free-wheeling ‘Circus’. Sorry…..
