KyoAni burned down by arson, at least 23 people murdered…

Sorry to be a huge bummer. I just heard about this after waking up. Kyoto Animation, who has produced more anime masterpieces than anyone this side of Ghibli, has been burned down by some murderous asshole. The BBC reports at least 23 people are dead. There are some literally world-level talents working at KyoAni, including Naoko Yamada, the director of my beloved K-On as well as such recent films as A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird (which I just check out of the library for a second watch.) I pray she is all right.

This is an unimaginable loss. KyoAni was famous as the one studio who didn’t hire freelancers for each show but kept a regular employed staff, which undoubtedly explains the consistently super high quality of their work. Ironically, that means the blow to the firm is unimaginably greater, I would think. I don’t know how many they employed, but 23 people (hopefully that number doesn’t rise, although it probably will) is a lot of people. Please give a prayer for the victims of this murderous act, who have provided so many people worldwide–myself very much included–so much joy.

Wow, that’s terrible, terrible news. Hope for the best possible outcome.

Merciful God that’s horrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.

I’ve heard the latest death toll is 33 people. I freely admit to not being an anime fan, but what the heck was the reason for this?

My prayers and thought to the people hurt in this and their families.

  • From what I’ve read so far (and it could be wrong) some unpublished light novelist decided they had plagiarized him and tried to get even. He’s been arrest, so there’s that.

Some of the commentators I’ve read at other sites seem to think the culprit might get an “innocent due to insanity” type deal. I hope not, or, if he does he finds himself a nice institution to stay at for the rest of his life. Because as popular as this studio seems to be, there’s a good chance of something unfortunate happening to him if he goes free.

Bear in mind I say this more in concern of having more people’s lives ruined by this nutbar than any over all concern for said nutbar.

It looks like Naoko Yamada is safe, according to Wikipedia’s article on the attack.

This is so sad a angering. Every time a mass shooting comes up, I always feel it should be pointed out that there are many ways to kill people and intentional fires have resulted in some very high casualties. Crazy people will find a way.

It is angering. There’s enough pain and suffering though natural disasters, traffic accidents, sickness etc without people adding to it with violence…

  • Mike Weller

With people, it’s the matter of deliberate choice that make’s it horrid. Natural disasters are just the planet ‘doing things’…but humans are of a different level.

    The real monsters.

Just when I thought I’d heard every possible ludicrous reason for committing mass murder.

From what I’ve read, he was also an ex convict who had caused disturbances and attacked a person prior to carrying this horrible act.
