Monster of the Day #1961

The G-Fest film I’m really excited about, of course, is Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster. (Ghidrah, back in my day.) It’s hard to explain how incredible Ghidrah was back then, a monster so powerful that it took Toho’s Big Three combined to defeat it. Plus the first combined universe mash-up since the Universal monster films. Monsters from three discrete films coming together! Wheeeeeee!

Ghidrah, of course, like all super-awesome foes (the Hammer Dracula, the Borg, the Daleks) because markedly less awesome the more it appeared, as it had to be defeated all the time. Even as a kid I was disappointed by Monster Zero, in that Ghidrah could be defeated by only two monsters (Godzilla and Rodan), rather than requiring three of them.

Anyway, great movie. I can’t wait to see it on a very big screen.

“Ghidrah” just sounds better. Plus, it’s the title that’s actually on the film, so no need to qualify using that spelling.

The tag team match of the century!
Yeah, I loved that flick. The American dub worked out almost as well as the KK Vs G dub. I like to watch the original version on the Toho DvDs from some years ago. The Original cut of both films is an interesting comparison.

Last month I got to see Gojira and Destroy All Monsters at the local Alamo Drafthouse. It was pretty great. They also showed Godzilla vs. Mothra (the ’90s one with Battra) but I didn’t think that one was worth the price. Anyway, I envy you seeing this on the big screen. It’s what I used to introduce my nephew to Godzilla because it’s pretty fantastic (or “awesome” as he put it, to my eternal joy).

I remember seeing Destroy All Monsters in a theater in 1969 or 1970. It left quite an impression on me and it’s one of my earliest and most vivid movie memories.
