Monster of the Day #1960

Sorry, I didn’t get my roundtable piece done (neither did anyone else), so I’m going to shoot for next weekend. Please contribute a piece if you would like. Any length is fine, it doesn’t have to be a big review or anything.

This is another short week for me, as I took off Thursday and Friday so that I could enjoy the Godzilla movies G-Fest is playing at the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge. Not the best line-up, frankly, since I’ll miss the last really good movie so I can take my niece home (it’s a bit of a drive), which is Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The other films include Godzilla’s Revenge (bleh) and X From Outer Space (!!!), but hey, they are showing the original Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, so that’s great.

    I thought Big G was kinda a jerk in this one. I mean Gabara is almost as big as he is and he demands Minilla fight him. Teaching your kid to stand up to bullies is all fine and good but a bully three times his size?

    Enjoy your time off Ken, having only seen the Showa films on a TV screen I have to envy you.

  • In my defense, I was out of the country all last week and only saw that there was a Roundtable this morning. Jamie will be laid up post-op for the next 6 weeks starting Wednesday, so I can probably find a way to make trouble next weekend.

    Funny, when I first saw this movie at age 6 or so I thought this movie rocked! And I adore the wacky US theme music (March of the Monsters) to this very day.

    Not so adorable was the heavy reliance on recycled old footage. Since no, um, “expensive” Tokyo model sets were trampled under foot for this outing, would it really have been more costly to shoot an extra fifteen minutes of footage on the Monster Island sets instead of double-dipping Son of Godzilla and Sea Monster?

    I understand NOTZILLA, DUKE OF THE MONSTERS will be screened at the convention itself. My brother is planning to be there, and I think they’re even going to have the Notzilla suit there too.
