Monster of the Day #1958

You’d think with all the anime I’m watching I’d give Lily C.A.T. a go this weekend for our Amazon Prime round table (email me your pieces at ken@jabootu.com!). Well, no. I just don’t particularly like sci-fi anime, especially dark sci-fi anime.

Speaking, after being denied on several occasions this year due to snow storms (twice!!!) and my own epic stupidity (I pre-bought a ticket but went to the wrong theater, which wasn’t showing that particular film), I FINALLY got out to see an anime movie last night. It was Studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart, and I knew absolutely nothing about it, which was tremendous. I sat there having no idea at all where the film would go. It was really great, so I have to do this more often, and Kiki’s Delivery Service is playing at the end of the month, along with some more recent fare. So pencil me in.

Holiday tomorrow! Have a great 4th, everyone!

Yeah, I hear LilyCAT is quite gruesome.

I just read the wikipedia synopsis. It appears to be a direct rip-off of Alien

  • The Rev.

I saw it a couple of times years ago; I recall finding it okay, maybe fairly good. Not enough that I’ve watched it since then. And it’s kind of like Alien with the monster from The Thing instead of a xenomorph.

I remember when I first saw Whisper of the Heart, I knew little about it but I didn’t have high expectations, in part because I’d previously been somewhat disappointed by another Ghibli film based on a manga by the same writer. It’s now in my top four or five for the studio and one of my favourite teen romances ever. The moment that turned me around on it was when Seiji picked up his violin and I realised just what he was going to play.

Yes, and when the grandfather and his friends join in is great. If it wasn’t for all high-profile competition in terms of Ghibli’s films, I think this one would be a lot more popular.
