Monster of the Day #1957

I’ve never watched Revenge of Dr X, despite the fact that it has a bad rubber monster suit and was written by Ed Wood (!). So I think this is the weekend. Thanks, Amazon Prime!

I actually have this on one of those “50 uh Movies kinda” box sets. I managed to watch a few minutes of this before falling asleep.

  • The Rev.

I haven’t seen it, either. Maybe it could end up being a multi-review movie for everyone, like your old roundtable reader reviews that I never got to be a part of and to this day wish I had?…

Not that I have ulterior motives or anything.

  • Gamera977

Hmm, I’d have thought it a Doctor Who monster if you hadn’t said so.

  • Wade Harrell

I’ve seen it but don’t remember much except what the monster looked like, that and some beautiful Japanese scenery. The Rifftrax version is available too.

Real title: THE VENUS FLYTRAP. Amusingly, considering how obscure it is today, it was once a rental staple under the REVENGE OF DR. X title -which actually used title cards from MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND and thus credits the wrong cast!

It is interesting, having seen Florida stand in for all parts of the world, to see Japan double as Florida!

  • Mike Weller

Ya know, I had that same thought. Scary ain’t it?

  • Ken_Begg

Hmm, OK, maybe I’ll hold off on that one then.

  • Gamera977

Watched it last night. Doctor Shouty (PhD in Shoutlogy) is a rocket scientist with stress issues. So he goes to beautiful Japan, meets the lovely and charming Noshiro and yells at her a lot. Then turns a Venus Fly-trap into a monster- and yells at it.
Not a bad movie but by the end I really wanted to tell the lead to have a nice frosty glass of STHU…

  • The Rev.

I was just spitballin’. Watch whatever you want, buddy. There’s a lot of stuff on there I can pick instead.

  • Ken_Begg

Wait, an Ed Wood script with too much dialogue?!

  • Gamera977

Was he really known for sparse dialog? I always thought it was howlingly bad dialog. Course I’ve only seen ‘Plan 9’, ‘Bride of the Monster’, and ‘Glen or Glenda’. There’s nothing here like the ‘snips, and snails, and puppy dog tails’ from ‘Glen or Glenda’. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing on the whole.

  • Ken_Begg

No, the joke is that Wood’s scripts tend to be very verbose.

  • Gamera977

    Ah, sorry, my mistake!
