Monster of the Day #1940

I probably liked the new Godzilla design a bit more this time, although as a Cranky Old Man I still prefer a more traditional design. Still, after the GINO design in the 1998 film, this was at least obviously Godzilla. Again, we’ll see him one more time given that Godzilla vs Kong is basically already in the can (or the hard drive, anyway), but enjoy it while you got it. Let’s hope Toho continues to make movies (they usually do just to keep the toy licenses and such going.)

    Hail to the king, baby!

  • Eric Hinkle

    Forget GINO, this is Godzilla!

I liked the alien captain claiming that ‘tuna-munching lizard’ wasn’t up to the task in ‘Final Wars’.

  • There hasn’t been much word on it since last year as far as I can tell, but Toho has made rumblings about starting a “World of Godzilla” in 2021, with Toho monster movies every couple of years or so. So we might still be heading for a new Kaiju Golden Age.

Flip side of that coin, I’m still waiting for the Gamera anniversary film to be made…

I am sure I am not alone in feeling that being from and located in Japan is a big part of what make Godzilla and Gamera films fun.

I hope we see some more Gojira movies from Toho soon. Though to be honest I still haven’t seen ‘Shin Gojira’ yet.

Godzilla is as Japanese as Superman American and James Bond British.

PS: Yeah, yeah, I know there’s been an Aussie Bond and I think at least one Superman has been played by a British actor….

Actors, yet not characters. Methinks it’s a useful difference.

Godzilla 1984 is my fave. of all the suits. Gidorah and Rodan look good, yet Mothra looks…roachy.
In the Godzilla comics, the 1st world gets, well, nuked. Makes me think the third world folks would say ‘I’m used to this crap, now it’s your turn.’ Which may define a lot of the opinions of this flick, or even the series.

You still haven’t gotten your email back yet Flangepart???

  • Mike Weller

Nope. Had to get a new one.
