Monster of the Day #1928

So on Sunday we watched a lot of misc stuff, including (apparently we hadn’t had enough Dolph Lundgren sci-fi on Saturday) Masters of the Universe. There are several monster guys, but towering about them is Frank Langella as Skeletor. His acting here is my go to example of a performance that transcends to an amazing degree the movie around it. Seriously, he is terrific.

On the other hand, I have seldom seen anything as nauseating in my life as Skeletor in the He-Man / She-Ra Christmas Special, who gets all mushy about this HORRIBLE space puppy. It’s disgusting.

Yeah, but some of Skeletor’s dialogue is hilarious. (Paraphrasing) “So, on Christmas, people get in fights! What do you mean, no? I like fights!”

Granted I’ve only seen the “I am not nice” excerpt on YouTube, I always assumed Skeletor was scheming something and was, in fact, not nice.

Yeah man did they ever mess up poor Skeletor in that special. It’s a complaint I’ve heard people making about things as varied as Disney’s ‘Maleficent’ and MLP:FiM: “Why can’t some people accept that some villains just work better as villains?”

The idea that ‘Oh, everyone would be nice and be my friend if I asked right’ behind that idea also strikes me as dangerously foolish.

Oh darn, back from vacation and with some real internet access and now Ken’s offline.

    Sheeeeesssssshhhhhhhhhh…………….

BTW: I did get to watch the ‘Norliss Tapes’ and ‘Chinese Ghost Story’ (’80s) version while I was off. Very slowly with lots of interruptions – there’s nothing quite as fun as taking about three hours or more to watch a hour and a half YouTube video. Next time I’ll try to just download them…
