Monster of the Day #1917

Vampirella was clearly different from Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie because she was an actual character with an ongoing series of stories in her magazine rather than just a host. Therefore unlike her compatriots she pretty much featured directly on the covers of her book. It’s almost like Warren thought she had some sort of intrinsic commercial hook or something.

Wasn’t she a hero, one of the good guys?

Poor lady having a wardrobe malfunction with her swim suit.

    As I recall.

The story goes Forry Ackerman was trying to develop a comic book character, presumably at the request of his publisher/partner Jim Warren. It was after seeing BARBARELLA, as Forry told it, that he hit upon the idea of mixing cheesecakey science fiction with his beloved horror materials. Thus was born a sexy adventuress from a planet of vampires where a blood-like substance filled their oceans and rivers. Willing to feed on an artificial chemical blood substitute, “Vampy” would fight horror-based galactic menaces while also serving as hostess for the mentioned anthology stories. I never read an issue of it, myself, but the character did become fairly popular in her time. She was the subject of an Aurora plastic kit (part of the MonsterScenes line), and there were even plans to produce a feature film version of the character (if memory serves, this was one of many potential Hammer projects which sadly failed to make it into production). I guess she periodically resurfaces in the comic books today.

Oh, and one should mention the movie that did get made (for HBO, maybe?) back in the 90’s, starring Talisa Soto (sp?) as the title character chasing a vampire criminal to Earth. Fans of the character seemed to hate it, but I recall it being better than it should have been. Of note, a young Brinke Stevens dressed as the character for a 70’s horror convention.

Yeah, but an anti-hero, because (if I remember correctly, and I was no regular Vampirella reader) she had blood lust issues.

Looking at the previous MotD, Cousin Eerie looks like what Alfred E,. Neuman must look when he hits his mid-50’s.

  • Not a bug, but a feature…

I think I saw a review of the movie version Rock commented on below where they had to change the costume since there was no way the comic version would stay on the actress.

Ha! I loved MonsterScenes when I was a kid. I had them all.

That is where a “wardrobe malfunction” would make a great shout out. Have her in a more modest outfit that gets slashed in a fight and it suddenly looks just like the comic book version. End fight quickly ;-)

Ha! I don’t think I ever read an issue of Vampirella either. What’s wrong with us?!
