IIRC, in the animated episode Gamera977 mentions, they had a glowing life support field around them when under water.

I remember they had the life support field belts when they boarded the alien ship (in the very first episode). In the underwater episode, they actually converted Kirk and Spock into water-breathers. Also, IIRC.

It was a really cool idea, guess they figured it would look hokey on the later live action series.
