Monday Post-Weekend Open Thread…

As is my wont now, I basically watch anime. I watched weekly chapters of slight but enjoyable shows like Anima Yell (a cutsie but fan-service free show about a young cheerleading squad) to the hilarious and occasionally awesome action sumo show Hinomaru Sumo. We’re heading towards the end of the fall season–winter is the one starting in January–and while I don’t think anything I’m watching on a seasonal basis right now is a classic, some are pretty decent. I will say that Iroduko: The World in Colors on Amazon Prime is gorgeous. It’s a good companion series with Amazon’s gentle but wonderful witchcraft series Flying Witch. I really like Japanese magic and folklore as it’s satisfyingly different from Western lore.

The two catalogue titles I’m focusing on right now are the very good high school concert band show Sound! Euphonium and the superlative character study March Comes In Like a Lion, which handles both tragedy and joy exceedingly well. I’m about 25 chapters into the 45 episode run and am already cringing as I rocket towards the end and run out of it. Such is the nature of things.

I should probably watch some Christmas stuff, though. Tis the season and all.

Anyone seen or read anything of note lately?

I spent most of the weekend binge-watching episodes of The Bill from 1992, none of them particularly memorable. For me the show didn’t really get good (at least to my tastes) until Beech’s corruption arc started around 1998.

I also finally got around to watching the Justice League movie, which was fine.

Not much. A guy approached our modeling club a few months ago about building a small diorama/scene for his son that served in the Middle East. One guy did the MRAP he served on and I did the figures for his son and the rest of the crew. I dropped the figures off by him Friday.

Other than that I watched it snow, wrapped Christmas gifts, and got my Christmas cards ready to go.

Oh, and I did watch ‘Phantasm V: Ravenger and was pleasantly surprised. It was a really good movie to finish up the series. And yes, there’s talk now of a remake… shhhhhheeeeeeeeesssssssssshhhhhhhhhh……………

And I got an awesome Ugly Christmas Sweater in Star Trek Online’s ‘Q Winter Wonderland’ event with a Santa hat wearing Gorn for my character. I swear I’d wear it in real life if could find one.

I watched a few YouTube reviews of the animated film “The Christmas Tree,” a terrible holiday special. I also re-watched “Rare Exports.”

I am finishing up “The Shattered Earth” Trilogy by Jemison. It definitely deserves all the awards.

I finally started hearing about her last week (just slow I guess), and was really intrigued. This may push me to but the books.

  • I’m in a rewatch phase, rewatching things like Big O (which is a giant robot show, for those who don’t know) and the glorious The Devil is a Part-Timer (which isn’t a giant robot show.)

Last year, I watched several DTV Krampus movies with the intention of watching Krampus at the end. I never got around to the reason for the marathon, but I’m kind of glad now, because last week I saw it at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I really, really liked it. It has that same dark fairy tale feel Pan’s Labyrinth does, and there were some great monsters in it. They also ran Silent Night, Deadly Night and had a live Q&A with Robert Brian Wilson afterward. He had some great stories from the filming. Perhaps it’s because he didn’t spend even a decade as part of Hollywood, but he was very down-to-earth and personable. He seems very appreciative that people still enjoy his movie all these years later.

Surprised Patty last night with a big-screen showing of Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. Fathom Events is showing it on Dec. 10th and Dec.16th around the US. Such a fun movie.
