Monster of the Day #1848

Oddly, it took A&C five years and a dozen more movies to meet another real monster (the Invisible Man they met was innocent of the murder he was accused of). However, Karloff did appear, so that’s nice.

I’ve noticed that the posters for these “Meet” movies don’t say “Abbott and Costello Meet…” They say “Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet…” So where would these films go in an alphabetized list? At the beginning of “A” or near the end of “B”?

I feel kinda embarrassed. I’ve only seen a few of their films, what I’ve seen were a riot though…

IIRC, Karloff did indeed play Dr. Jekyll but Mr. Hyde was played by veteran stunt man Eddie Parker. (Parker also doubled for Lugosi in Bride of the Monster).

Also when this film was first released, Universal issued a cheat publicity photo of Lou standing with Dracula and the Frankenstein Monster. The scene depicted actually takes place in a museum that Lou’s character wanders into, and the two monsters with him are (theoretically) made of wax.

I love this movie, it’s a riot. Especially for the scene where Lou gets bejabbered with a needle full of the Hyde formula and ends up terrorizing London alongside the ‘real’ Mister Hyde.

The bit with the wax head over a little cat is even funnier, especially when you wonder if you’d react any better when you saw that thing start crawling around.

I haven’t seen any of them. I’ve barely seen any of their stuff. I should probably give them another chance, but I recall not finding them particularly funny as a kid, preferring Laurel and Hardy and the Stooges.

I’ll agree. Look, A&C made some very good films, especially in the early days. And Meets Frankenstein is a classic. There’s also a lot of lackluster stuff from them, especially later in their career. That’s true of everyone, though.

However, there is no comparison for me with Laurel & Hardy (who I deeply adore) or the Marx Brothers. After that I’d go with W.C. Fields and Bob Hope, then A&C, who make me laugh when they’re on but who I don’t have that connection with. The Stooges are sort of a different animal in that we get them in 20 minute bursts. That’s also true, admittedly, for L&H, as they have two great films but most of their wonderful stuff is shorts. Oh, and a shout out to Our Gang as well.

I should probably see more Marx Brothers stuff than I have; I did enjoy what I’ve seen. I’d also put Buster Keaton up there with L&H. Man, I love him.

I guess A&C ranks higher with me simply because I only watch their best films and tend to ignore all the rest.

BTW, Ken, since you brought up L&H, have the monsters from Babes in Toyland ever been a MOTD?

The Boogiemen? I’m pretty sure they have, but after nearly 2000 of these, the memories get a bit hazy.
