Monster of the Day #1846

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein revitalized the team’s career. They quickly meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (a fun murder comedy) and then the Invisible Man, albeit not the Vincent Price version who cameoed in Meet Frankenstein. The poster makes the film look much more gothic horror than it is, it’s more of an Abbot and Costello riff on Here Comes Mr. Jordan, what with the boxing and all. Even in the poster the boys seem much more interested in the highly visible woman, not that I can blame them.

The duo wouldn’t get a proper horror comedy again for a bit longer….

I’ve only seen “Meet Frankenstein” (and of course have heard “Who’s on First” a billion times), so what A&C films would people recommend?

  • BGBear_rnh w/oofferinganyproof

    Buck Privates and Foreign Legion.

  • zombiewhacker

Also… this one. A@C Meet The Invisible Man is a fun comedy-scifi mash-up with good special fx, great slapstick moments, and William Frawley in a plum role as a police detective.

  • Speaking of Price’s “Invisible Man” cameo in “Frankenstein”, would it count as an “appearance” since he never technically “appeared”?

  • KeithB

The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap is also good, if only for Marjorie Main.

I like Ride ’em Cowboy with an out-of-place Ella Fitzgerald and Morris Ankrum as a bad guy.

  • Rock Baker

I second BUCK PRIVATES, also IN THE NAVY, “KEEP ‘EM FLYING”, HOLD THAT GHOST, WHO DONE IT?, BUCK PRIVATES COME HOME, COMIN’ ROUND THE MOUNTAIN, HERE COME THE COEDS, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY, IN SOCIETY, HIT THE ICE, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD, THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS, really, it’s hard to go wrong with Bud and Lou.

  • BGBear_rnh w/oofferinganyproof

I like “The Time of their Lives” in that Bud got to do a little more acting than just being a grouch. He also was shown driving a car which I understand he could not do in real life. Sounds like a millennial.

  • Eric Hinkle

THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES is great, if only because after seeing all the movies were Bud smacks Lou around, watching a ghostly Lou get some payback is very amusing. The ghostly SFX are fun too.

And I love the panicked take (ghostly) Lou does when (living) Gale Sondergaard walks into the room he’s in: “Od’s Bodkins! What well did she come out of?”

  • Eric Hinkle

I’d also add to that list AFRICA SCREAMS, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET CAPTAIN KIDD. The latter two aren’t their best films but they can have some good laughs.

  • BGBear_rnh w/oofferinganyproof

His agent would take care of that, no way he would lose his 10%.

  • Rock Baker

Oh, certainly, I should have mentioned AFRICA SCREAMS! I think that was my first one, in fact.

  • Rock Baker

It’s true Bud did not drive. He learned how to drive to shoot the one scene in the picture (where he’s barely visible anyway), and never drove again in his life!

  • HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

  • Gamera977

It’s neither here or there but I picked a collection of all the ‘Phantasm’ movies before Halloween and am slowly working though them. Has Ken used the Tall Man, his army of evil dwarvies, or killer spheres yet as MotD?

Btw: Reggie the bald, middle-aged, former ice cream salesman is my new hero!!!

  • zombiewhacker

Wait… bald, middle-aged, AND a former ice cream salesman? Why, that’s our new MOTD right there!

  • Gamera977

Well, actually bald and middle-aged describes me, though I’ve never sold ice cream.

Reggie has had a few one night stands with things that could be MotD though. Seems to be a running joke that every woman he picks up turns out to be some sort of reanimated evil monster…

  • zombiewhacker

    Sorry, meant no offense. :)

BTW, have you ever seen Kenny & Company? It’s an early teen flick from Don Coscarelli, pre-Phantasm (1976), but featuring many of the same cast members, including Reggie Bannister, albeit in different roles.

  • Gamera977

    Lol, none taken!

Nope, sounds interesting. I’ll have to look for that one too!
