Monster of the Day #1842

A spin-off from the serious social drama Dead End, the East Side Kids lead by Huntz Hall and Leo Gorcey, appeared in half a dozen other major films, including Angels with Dirty Faces with Cagney and Bogart and the John Garfield starrer They Made Me a Fugitive. Universal had a competing group called the Little Tough Guys that included many of the same actors. Now we tend to think of them (those who still do think of them that is) as the Bowery Boys, which the moniker the group appeared under for a looong series of cheapie Monogram B-Pictures.

I once saw an elderly Huntz Hall playing a priest in some movie. It gave me a bit of a shock. He was instantly recognizable.

Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall are baffled by the ghost of Daffy Duck.

    Duck season finally got him.

My first East Side Kids picture, and I think one of their best. Still my favorite, with MILLION DOLLAR KID a close second.

It’s surprising to see that Ava Gardner of all people once acted alongside the East Side Kids. I do enjoy this movie, it’s a lot of fun.

Yes, if I remember right this is directly before she married Biggest Star in the World Mickey Rooney, which definitely helped her career.

Not a fan of the lady? Not trying to be snarky, just curious.

And I just learned that Andy Rooney, of all people, wasn’t just a sex symbol to teenage girls(!), he apparently could have his pick of the women, and frequently did. Seriously, Andy Rooney?

  • Beckoning Chasm

Andy? Are you sure you don’t mean Mickey? An old complaining curmudgeon doesn’t sound like teenage-girl fandom fodder.
