Monster of the Day #1789

I’ve out of town for the rest of the week, so let’s see if I can actually set these to post ahead of time.

Man, that’s just pretty.

It took me a long time to figure out WordPress’ “scheduling” feature. It’s not as intuitive as it should be.

  • I sure wish all of Wellman’s stuff wasn’t out of print.

  • Gamera977

Lol, I just read that issue a few weeks ago!

  • Gamera977

Took me awhile but I tracked down all of his ‘Silver John’ stories and it was worth it. Now there’s all of his other stuff…

The Devil is no gentleman. You should see his Twitter timeline.

It’s an interesting story. Is witchcraft really bad is you’re only using it to help yourself, your husband, and your children and not harming anyone? Personally I’d say making a pact with Satan is but still it’s an interesting question.

    It’s in the details ;-)

You can check with Night Shade Books, they did all of Wellman’s non-SF short fantasy and horror in five big hardcovers. They did the same with Clark Ashton Smith and William Hope Hodgson, and are currently reprinting the latter two authors in softcover. If enough people ask they may do the same with Wellman.

Night Shade is also doing the entire Jules de Grandin series by Seabury Quinn in hardcover right now. They have the first three books out with two more coming; believe me, they’re worth the money!

I like Wellman’s cover story ‘Coven’ as much for its use of the Reconstruction south as a setting (and no ‘commentary’, thank Heaven) and for using a Pennsylvania Dutch character with the ‘Long Lost Friend’ book.

The interactions between the irate ‘demon’ and its coven are a lot of fun too. “You summoned me here out of my own world; did you ever ask if I /wanted/ to come?”

Oh thanks!!! Will check those out!
