Monster of the Day #1783

Weird War Tales proved a big or at steady hit for DC, given it’s robust 12 year (!) run. Of course war comics were generally pretty solid sellers until recent decades, and covers like this certainly couldn’t have hurt the book.

Comes in low with the rising sun, play Wagner, scares the heck out of them.

I can remember one story they did with the Japanese unleashing what was basically Godzilla on the American fleet. And one where a bunch of Nazis get vampirized by a lovely Frenchwoman. They fly off to attack the Americans — only to find that the French girl warned them. As a chaplain says, “We are unable to save her soul, but we can save her home.”

Really, there were a TON of awesome stories in WWT.

I can see that DC /had/ this as one of their big Showcase collections, but it’s out of print. The cheapest one I see on Amazon is going for $85. Hopefully DC will reprint it!

I also love how they had Death in the stories as such a philosophical, if morose and just plain tired guy. As he remarked at the end of one story about a Golem that was turned back into earth: “Ashes to ashes, and dust to dust. In the Weird War — in every war — My work will never be done.”
