Monster of the Day #1753

I noted last week as we looked at some less well executed comic book covers that there weren’t a lot of Jack Kirbys or Jack Davises to go around. However, there was Bob Powell, who could hold his own with either of them when it came to horror comics.

    Example 3:

    The Female Employee should:
    A. Shrug it off, it is just part of having fun at work

    B. Contact the undead’s supervisor and report the incident.

    C. Inform the undead that you find this behavior unacceptable and you will report it to HR if it happens again
    D. Shoot the undead in the head

Monster, ‘HR, I have a complaint to file! She keeps forcing her religion on me!!!’

Lady, ‘Sir, shoving a crucifix in his face was the only way to keep him from molesting me!!!’

I noticed this cover didn’t carry one of those self-imposed “Comic Code” seals that were ubiquitous back in the day.

I wonder if this cover would have survived censorship (self or otherwise) if it bore the seal.

  • Ken_Begg

No, because the Code basically outlawed all supernatural elements. That’s why there was an explosion of monster comics after the Code died off in the ’70s.

  • zombiewhacker

Was Warren Publishing ever subject to the code? It seems like their covers were always pushing the envelope, even as far back as the ’60s.

  • Ken_Begg

No, that’s why they published black and white magazine-sized periodicals, so they wouldn’t be subject to the code.

    Thanks! Didn’t know that.
