Monster of the Day #1742

Boy, I bet a nice copy of this is worth a couple of bucks.

I was surprised how many Weird Tales covers featured flat out nudity (no, not monster nudity). I guess they were kept behind the newsstand.

Those are the most downright jolly and cheerful Deep Ones I think I’ve ever seen.

And yeah there was a lot of nudity, generally topless women in WT, though done in what I’d call a more ‘artsy’ style than risque. Though back in that time it probably would have been pretty racy. In the letters column there were occasional complaints about it though most fans seemed to see it as art and were happy to defend it. Most of these covers were painted by a lady named Margret Brundage.

    Fishing looks good.

  • There’s something fishy about that cover.

They always need a hook to get you to buy.

So Rusty and I were out manning and he caught one but he didn’t have his license so we threw him back.

    Did they work for scale?
(Got that pun outta the way.)

    Just slip them a fin.

I remember reading that Brundage enjoyed drawing scenes of women being bound and menaced. So if you included such a scene in you story you were likely to get the cover, which meant you were paid more. Writers like Seabury Quinn and Robert E. Howard took the hint.

Those are the goofiest-looking Deep Ones I’ve ever seen.
