Monster of the Day #1719

Unsurprisingly for the French poster, the giant octopus is more of a fashion statement.

  • Acethepug

I love how the octopus that lived just long enough for the Green Gargantua to eat it is now his shoulder-perched mascot.

And this has to be one of the only films where the JDF weapons, the maser trucks in this case, actually WORK against the giant monsters!

And to think this is a sequel to the Frankenstein’s monster (sort of) fighting Baragon

    Thanks for the smile!

  • Beckoning Chasm

Wow, that is one hair-pin curve. That has to cause more mayhem than the monsters.

  • Gamera977

Lol, ok this one I have seen, own it on DVD even!

Kumi Mizuno , Nick Adams, and two awesome monsters – can’t beat that by much.

  • bgbear_rnh

    Russ Tamblyn isn’t it?

  • bgbear_rnh

    Fonda, Honda, whatever it takes.

  • Gamera977

Dolt! Right you are. I should have checked the IMDB first.

  • The Rev.

That’s probably my favorite part of the movie, seeing the masers actually do some damage for once, instead of, at best, annoying the monster.

  • zombiewhacker

Does anyone know if the maser cannon scene from War of the Gargantuas was reused as stock footage for G. vs. Megalon?

  • zombiewhacker

True story: War of the Gargantuas was the first movie Brad Pitt ever watched as a child.

  • zombiewhacker

Yep. Once of my faves as a kid. Green Gargantua probably scared me more than any other Kaiju.

  • zombiewhacker

One memorable line from the film: after a survivor of the first Green Gargantua attack recounts his harrowing tale to skeptical first responders, Russ Tamblyn sniffs dismissively, “Ah, he was probably on a bad acid trip.” So much for innocent 1950s-style kaiju, eh?

He should have danced so it would have been easy to remember it was him ;-)

  • Flangepart

I think it was used more than once.

Note for World Of Tanks players…when green G picks up a tank, it’s an M4 Sherman…and when it crashes to earth post-throw…it’s an M-46 Patton.
You don’t have to be an armchair general like me to say “Wait…those don’t look alike. Did they run out of the right prop?”

  • Flangepart

RE:’The words get stuck in my throat’ girl…you know, the off key chick? Am I the only one wanted her go get ‘stuck in his throat? Find a note and hold it, baby!

  • Eric Hinkle

I honestly thought they were building up to that when I first saw the movie!

And to anyone else who saw this movie as a youngster, were you also shocked to see someone get eaten on screen? I was stunned at the age of 7-8 when Gaira stuffed that screaming woman into his mouth and spit the chewed-up dress back out.

    Brought to you by Revlon

  • The Rev.

Yes, it was used in Godzilla vs. Megalon. I think some of the scenes of them firing are from this movie, and there’s the moment they’re shooting something obscured behind trees that is definitely from this. It was possibly used in Godzilla vs. Gigan, as well, but it’s been a while since I’ve rewatched that one.

  • The Rev.

I first saw it in high school and I was still very surprised by that. I had seen Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, and Ebirah is clearly implied to have eaten those natives attempting to escape, but that was nothing like what happens here. Obviously I hadn’t seen Gamera vs. Gaos yet…
