Monster of the Day #1713

Xenus hated the taste of humans, but his mom made him eat them because they were nutritious.

I have been dipping my toe in anime for a year or two now, after starting to watch Naruto (I know, picking the most obvious show). I found a show I LOVED last week and it actually inspired me to buy a Roku stick and subscribe to Crunchyroll. (500 episodes of Naruto Shippuden to watch alone!) Anyway, I’ve assembled enough stuff off the top to keep me busy for a long time, but suggestions are always welcome.

These are obvious suggestions to Anime fans, but just in case no one has suggested them yet…

    Dark but Wonderful
    – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    – Death Note
    – Psycho Pass
    – Steins Gate
    – Fate/Zero

Comedies (Your mileage may DEFINITELY vary)
    – Ranma 1/2 (very old school, but funny)
    – Ouran High School Host Club
    – Assassination Classroom
    – One Punch Man

    Drama with Comedy
    – Yuri on Ice
    – Hetalia
    – The Seven Deadly Sins

Mecha (which I guess to be your sort of thing… :-) )
    – Gundam — Unicorn
    – Gundam 00 (skip the movie)
    – Code Geass

    Special class:
    – Sword Art Online — Based on a fictional MMO, with what some call very problematic romantic relationships, but I loved it. Enter with caution.

  • Naruto‘s pretty good, though the length of the series sort of bogs me down. My Hero Academia is worth checking out

  • Toby Clark

My own favourites that I’ve seen from start to finish:
    Neon Genesis Evangelion
    Puella Magi Madoka Magica
    Death Note
    Paranoia Agent
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
    Digimon Adventure
    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    Love Hina
    Angel Beats

A few others that I call favourites despite not finishing yet:
    Bleach
    the original Dragon Ball
    Ranma 1/2
    InuYasha
    Sailor Moon
    School Rumble
Digimon Adventure 02 (I have seen every episode dubbed, which I don’t recommend)
    Digimon Tamers
Pokemon – specifically the DP and XY sagas (again, I’ve seen nearly every available episode dubbed from the start)
    Kamichu

I also want to mention one of my favourite manga series that had a pretty uneven anime adaptation, Mahou Sensei Negima.

  • Beckoning Chasm

It’s been over a decade since I’ve seen any anime, but when I was watching it, I had a few series I recommended:
    1. Noir. Probably the best series I’d seen, though it’s dark and quite harrowing.
    2. Haibane Renmei. Hard to describe this, but it’s really gorgeous.
    3. Pretear – my favorite, I’ve seen this one many times.
    4. Eden’s Bowy – very slow starting, but I really enjoyed the characters.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I have to say, that’s one gorgeous cover. I wonder though–the lower limbs seem to be rooted in the ground, so do they just look like legs, or could the creature walk around?

  • bgbear_rnh

I really liked Psycho Pass. I have not seen the second season, heard mixed reviews.

  • Acethepug

    Some of mine, mostly older (like me);

Record of Lodoss War (the original, NOT the newer remakes/reimaginings — and probably not the Legend Of Crystania “continuations” either)

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) – original series.

Dirty Pair (Sunbow TV Series and the OAV series, don’t bother with Dirty Pair Flash)

    Ranma 1/2

(all available on subbed DVD official releases — just a few of my favorites)

  • Dorothy Cobb

I haven’t watched much anime but I loved Boogiepop Phantom.

  • bgbear_rnh

If you like the lunacy of “Ranma 1/2” or more like “Urusei Yatsura”, you may like “My Bride is a Mermaid”.

  • Ericb

“Ugh, German food gives me gas.”

  • Flangepart

    Not a lot to suggest…but…
    Patlabor
    Last Exile
Only fully Japanese vids I’ve seen, Ken.

  • Rock Baker

I’ve never been much interested in anime, but one show I absolutely love is Love Hina. It was followed up by both a Christmas and a Summer special, though I didn’t care for Love Hina Again as I felt it had lost the special charm of the earlier episodes. The first run and it’s two specials I recommend, though. I also rather enjoyed High School of the Dead, but I don’t know if that’s one I would repeat.

  • Ken_Begg

    No love for Cowbody Bebop?!

  • Ken_Begg

Seriously, thanks for all the suggestions. I have several of the series mentioned below in my queue already.

  • Acethepug

Thanks for the tip, I will check it out.

  • kgb_san_diego

Forgot to mention that one. Absolutely yes. Also Attack on Titan.

  • Toby Clark

It’s a notch below what I call a favourite (8/10 on IMDb). But I have seen it from start to finish, and it does have its moments.

  • Toby Clark

I liked Love Hina and the Christmas special (though not so much the Spring one). I highly recommend Ken Akamatsu’s later manga series Negima. (It has a couple of anime adaptations, neither of which were ultimately very good, though the first had its moments).

  • bgbear_rnh

Absolutely, but I assume everyone has seen it.

  • Flangepart

D’OH! Forgot! How did that happen?

  • The Rev.

He knows about “One-Punch Man.” We actually watched the first episode at last year’s T-Fest. God that show is funny.

A few of those I’ve heard good things about but just haven’t gotten around to. “Ranma 1/2” was one of my earliest anime encounters. I haven’t watched it in years; I wonder how it’d hold up.

  • The Rev.

Hey Ken, was “Naruto” the one that you got Crunchyroll for, or was it something else? If it’s something else I’d be curious to know what. Considering you got me onto “Attack on Titan” and “OPM” I’d definitely consider what you recommend in this regard.

  • Rodford Smith

I would add the three theatrical films made from the original Gundam series. The animation is a bit old school, but the story and characters work very well.
