Monster of the Day #1588

I assume Conan was still under copyright at that time? Still, man, I am digging these covers.

For some reason I’m having trouble getting the preview pic on the home page. I’ll work on that later.

Maybe it’s just me but seems odd the Legendary Barbarian looks smaller than the good doctor. Of course if he were much bigger he’d obscure Spektor but seems like the artist would have reversed them.

  • Gamera977

‘Doctor Spektor and a Legendary Barbarian vs. The Rock!!!’

    Sorry….

  • But are we certain that it’s Conan and not Brak or Kane or any one of a thousand “legendary” barbarians?

  • bgbear_rnh

    or Figaro, the legendary barber.

  • sandra

The monster looks like the one from the mad doctor cover. Perhaps he’s on vacation.

  • Gamera977

Or Patrick Swazye as Dalton the legendary bouncer.

  • Gamera977

    ‘The Legendary Doctor!’

    ‘Doctor who?’

    ‘No, not that Doctor’

    ‘What doctor!?!’

    ‘Huh!?!?!’

  • bgbear_rnh

Are you going to tell me the name of the legendary doctor?

    No

  • Flangepart

Doc, L.B. and the Frankenstein monster…exactly how many Genres is that, two or three?

  • bgbear_rnh

I am still contemplating “The Horrors of Death Head Island”. The thought of being trapped with all those Jerry Garcia fans. Shudder.

At the time? The exact status of Conan’s copyrights aren’t 100% clear NOW. (It’s generally held that a lot of Robert E. Howard’s works have fallen into public domain, although Paradox Entertainment claims the trademark to Conan and other associated characters. For comic books, Dark Horse currently has the license to produce Conan comics.)

(A quick bit of additional research: the issue shown is The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor #16, cover-dated September 1975 (so it was probably released around June). Marvel Comics licensed Conan in 1970, publishing comics with the character until 2000. Western/Gold Key was probably trying to ride Marvel’s success with the character, but also trying to do so in a way that wouldn’t get the lawyers involved. Just guessing, there, though.)

  • Marsden

    Maybe it’s Dagar the Invincible.

  • Eric Hinkle

Dr. Spektor and Conan the Barbarian versus the Monster of Frankenstein?? I would so watch that movie.

  • My monitor does weird things to the aspect ratio of the cover image. On first glance, I had to wonder what Dr. Spektor and a rapier-wielding Conan were doing fighting Moses on Mount Sinai….
