Monster of the Day #1554

So we ended the day shift with our usual TV slot. We watched Tybo the Carrot Man menace the crew of the Jupiter Two (wow, that show could drag). However, inspired by the fact it had just joined Netflix, I showed the first episode of One Punch Man. It’s hilarious, but you wonder how they will sustain a series that could be called One Joke Man. You do it, it turns out, the normal way; good writing, expanding the cast with great characters and inspired world building.

The first episode is the show at the most basic, however, with the hero, who increasingly bemoans how powerful he is, ‘fighting’ a series of crazy anime-inspired monsters who always pause to explain their crazy backstories. This guy became a monster because “I ate a lot of crab.” He’s my favorite one, unsurprisingly.

Seriously, check it out if you haven’t seen it.

So ‘One Punch Man’ is actually pretty good after all?

  • Not to oversell it, but One Punch Man is very probably the second best Anime going. It doesn’t fall into the typical Anime tropes and has a story that’s both ridamndiculous and moving. I like it a great deal and can’t wait for the second season.

Haven’t seen the show but I was thinking that it would be wonderful if One Punch Man would take on the 1978 editions of the Super Friends and Legion of Doom.

Since the Super Friends and the Legion of Doom couldn’t punch, I think One Punch Man would have the advantage.

Well, yeah. That was the joke. :)

I’ve only gotten through the first three or four episodes, but it’s pretty damn great so far, and according to Ken it stays high quality throughout so I look forward to finally being able to finish it.

The Crablante flashback pictured here is f’ing hilarious, but the funniest joke comes later the same episode with a different villain. I’m not spoiling it, but the entire Fest crew about brought the house down when it happened.

Thanks for the recommendation. I mostly know of it, what little I do know that is, through the manga.

Half man, half crustation…all silly. Just say ‘It’s from japan’…say no more!
