Monster of the Day #1529

I think I like this poster more than I did the actual movie. Although they seem to have used the off-model Godzilla from the Godzilla vs the Thing poster art. Anyway, I had this piece leftover from last week do to my Imgur issues, since solved. Thanks, Imgur!

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I saw Logan, which is quite good. I wish I didn’t know the basic plot, since one character that is meant to have some mystery about her is known by almost everyone before they see the movie. I don’t know why people want to know stuff before they see the movie, but they clearly do. I mean, there was a trailer for the Alien knock-off Life and it just went on and on showing way too much of what happens in the film.

I saw Iron Fist on Netflix. The Trump presidency has really gotten the culture wars back in full swing. The show’s critics review is 16%, while the normal viewer review is 86%. Notably many of the professional reviewers used terms like mansplaining and stuff, and most went on about their issues with the main character being white. (Even though, you know, he is.) There are problems with the show, but it’s far closer to being 86% than 16%, that’s for sure. I can’t even imagine how exhausting it is to look at everything through a racial lens all the time. Can we just start calling these people out on being racists? I swear they are so obsessive on this stuff that they want to bring the one drop rule back.

I also had a one day, 50% off coupon on Half Price Books. So I got the fifth season of Venture Bros on Blu Ray. I hadn’t watched the show in a while, and I forgot how much I love it. The fact there is a sixth season to hunt down makes me happy, and I think they are signed for two more, although their seasons are very short now. Oh, and Netflix will put the new (by which I mean, latest) season of Archer up in a week or two. Good times.

I’ve only finished the first 3 episodes of Iron Fist, but 86% sounds good to me. I notice most of those shows did start better and had some problems wrapping up, so maybe I’ll lower that later. I’m really enjoying now, though.

I don’t want to ruin Logan for anyone, but the little girl is X-23 isn’t she? And I just saw a trailer before Dr. Strange in November and a few TV spots, I’m guessing.

I think it’s terrible how decisive some people are, for a short term political gain they create long term damage that will not easily go away and will lead to more bad things. It’s terrible, but it’s quite common now.

Very cool, neat design and I love how the artist fit four kaiju in there.

I’ve been seeing constant ads for ‘Life’ on the Discovery Channel, my reaction on seeing the critter in the Petri dish was ‘Gee, they’re remaking “The Green Slime!'”

And frankly whenever I see terms like ‘manspaining’ or ‘cis-male’ I stop reading. Life is too short to waste time with idiots. I don’t understand this nonsense and I don’t want to twist my brain into the level of insanity to do so. SF/Fantasy writer and huge Doctor Strange fan John C. Wright had a great article on his blog on the decision to replace The Ancient One in the comics who was an elderly Asian man with a middle-aged white woman in the movie version. Some made sense, in that TAO was from Tibet which if left in would get the movie banned in China. The rest of the reasons were basically bat-guano insane. Somehow using an Asian actor was considered raciest and a white woman was ok… wrap your brain around that…

FYI, Disqus has an has an spoiler html tag now that gives a gray box and reveals the comment with a cursor roll over. Kinda handy when talking film. “spoiler” is the word you use in the code.

it looks like this hi Marsden.

  • bgbear_rnh

It does not have to make sense, just make someone feel good about themselves.

  • Godzilla On Monster Island was a milestone for me. I’d seen all the Showa Godzillas except for it and it took me a few years to actually see it. While not the best, I like it quite a bit, if for no other reason than it introduces the glorious Gigan. My brother Todd refers to him as the Starscream of the Godzilla universe (acting tough but cutting out the moment the tide turns for the heroes) and i don’t think Todd’s wrong.

  • I think she’s supposed to be, yeah,

    no “s”

  • bgbear_rnh

    I mean no second “s” ;-)

  • The Rev.

OH. MY. GOD. Your brother is absolutely right! How did I never pick up on that? I love Starscream, and I love Gigan. I don’t know if I can call Gigan my favorite Godzilla foe (the original King G and MechaG are stiff competition), but Starscream was my favorite Decepticon. Starscream kicking Megatron into the void of space in the movie actually made me cheer…so you can imagine how angry I got when the inferior Megatron 2.0 vaporized him.

For me this film had one thing going for it, it had Anguirus in a staring role. I always like this guy for some reason. Too bad the producers seemed determined to make him the Aquaman of the Kaiju world.

  • Thank you kindly. Wondered how I botched it.

  • Flangepart

Nah, my brain is like an easy open birthday present- not wrapped too tight. It’s unfine as it is…now where did I leave that bucket of animated slime…

  • Flangepart

When you’re #2, you try harder. Also, being a quadruped gives him ‘cute puppy monster’ status.

  • Ericb

So, the Ringo Starr of Monster Island.

  • I think Starscream was most everybody’s favorite. Chris Latta did a great job with the voice, and the character really isn’t the same with out him (same holds true with Cobra Commander.)

I saw the new Kong movie (a treat from my brother). The endless previews included two Ridley Scott sequels, one yet another socially concious tie-in to ALIEN. Mr. Scott.. let it go, man!

Anyway, KONG was fun. Though set in ’73, it has a real 80’s vibe to it. Nice color, too. The rampant CGI thing has, I hope, about run it’s course, though.

One thing, you’d expect a Kong movie to be doing a lot better than it is. I know it opened opposite a Disney movie, but it was several screens down from the main lobby of the local multiplex. Not a great sign for a new release that should be doing boffo boxoffice.

AH, yes, GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND. The film that taught me about alternate titles. US video distributors offered both GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND and the International version, GODZILLA VS GIGAN. Running across one at the video store, we rented it when I was a kid. A month or so later, we ran across the other one and thought it might be a sequel… Fortunately, I really liked the film!

I just don’t think giant monsters are a thing anymore, much like musicals and westerns. KSI will probably at least break even, given it’s $190m budget, but probably won’t make a huge profit. We’ll see how it does in Japan and China, although the China market isn’t as lucrative as it seems for American companies. I imagine they’ll go ahead with GvKK anyway, because of the marquee value, but if that doesn’t really hit I don’t know where they go after that.

Then there’s Meg, but I have little hopes for that, as much as I’d like to.

  • Eric Hinkle

This is OT but am I wrong or did this site once have reviews of Peter Benchley’s ‘The Beast’ and of that dire ‘Captain Planet’ cartoon? Because they both seem to have vanished.

  • Ken_Begg

Sadly, I never ported them over from the old site, which is gone now….

  • Eric Hinkle

Darn! They were a joy to read.
