Monster of the Day #1524

Sex and violence, the two great draws.

We’ve featured the monster, and also behind the scene candids, and now the poster. And why not? Bless you, Paul Blaisdell.

Have a great weekend, everyone. If you’re an especial Tom Baker fan, catch the last two seasons–well, British seasons, so we’re talking like 16 episodes–of Monarch of the Glen on Netflix before the show goes away in April. During the last two seasons there was a nearly complete cast changeover, including the lead character. They also brought in the older Baker to play a lovable reprobate uncle. He still had it.

‘Do you serve crab monsters here?’

‘We serve everyone, please sit down.’

Pretty cool monsters, the only thing I really didn’t like was giving them the human-like eyes which I thought looked kinda silly. The whole eating people and absorbing their brains was a bit wacky but really creepy at the same time.

  • Gamera977

I had no idea Baker was still acting, sounds pretty cool!

If there’s something strange, on the sandy shore.
Who you gonna call? (Crab Busters! )
If it’s really big and you can’t ignore.
Who you gonna call? (Crab Busters!)

The Monarch of the Glen is from about 10 years ago.

    Brain eating was weird.
Had to wonder what the monsters thought of some of the ‘dinners’.
“For mere human, that intellect went down rather well.”
“Oh, lucky you. I got the porn addict…now all I can think of is naked human females.”
“Ah…that can’t be good. No egg sacks.”

As beautiful as these posters are, I wonder if kids drawn to see the resultant films developed cynicism at an early age.

  • Acethepug

He’s currently doing a voice on the Star Wars:Rebels cartoon, if that is of interest.

  • The Rev.

You know, I really need to see this at some point…

  • Ken_Begg

That could possibly be arranged. Some kind of group showing, perhaps?

  • He’s also doing Doctor Who Audios for Big Finish.

  • Wade Harrell

This movie is the perfect example of adding a twist to make an otherwise hackneyed idea memorable. When it came out, radiation embiggened critters were already old hat, but having them absorb the personalities of the people they ate and talk in their voices was something new. Also, that they could project their voices through metal objects gave us the weird scene where everyone is sitting around staring at and listening to a talking gun. I love that scene!

My copy has it, ‘Not of This Earth’, and ‘War of the Satellites’ on two DVDs. Seventeen bucks at Amazon.

  • Beckoning Chasm

The entire thing was, and may still be on YouTube.

“I’ll trade you that that one for the political wonk I’ve got here.”

  • Marsden

I’d recommend some nice butter for dipping and some lemon wedges.

  • The Rev.

I mean, that would be great, but where are we going to find a group to show it to at such short notice?

  • Ericb

I love the end when the crab starts ranting away like a Bond villain in a French accent.

Has anyone heard about TCM’s Robert Osbourne dying? I think it’s a shame, I really enjoyed how he described the movies being shown. You never got the idea that he saw genre films as being beneath him like some of their other reviewers.

  • Gamera977

Gee whiz, hadn’t heard anything about it.

    RIP (sigh)
