Monster of the Day #1424

Why the shift into color for the second commercial? Don’t know.

They wanted you to recognize the color of the Diet Dr. Pepper can when you went to look for it in the store?

Now we know where Minya came from. A night of drunken (well, caffeine-addled) debauchery.

Heh…think the Japanese background ‘cliches’ would go over with our tender snowflakes today, cause I don’t.
So, Kaiju selling products week. There be a fair amount of examples, methinks.

Mothra gets pretty upset every time the people from RAID call.

It’s because the sequel films were in color. The first commercial is a spoof of GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS. This one is a spoof of the VERSUS entries. I thought it quite clever.

  • What a crock. Everybody knows Godzilla doesn’t mate. He reproduces a far more efficient way: by finding eggs that just happen to be lying around. Their usually surrounded by giant mantis.

  • Ken_Begg

Yeah, I thought of that. I guess I was too pedantic, since the first versus sequel is also in black and white. I think bgbear’s theory that they wanted the audience to be able to recognize the then new Diet product probably comes closest to it.

    Manti?

  • After looking it up online, it’s mantises. Sounds wrong to my ear for some reason, but you can’t argue with the internet and expect to win.

And then they switch the can to Dr. Pepper can to white a couple of years later. The blue can does come across as a little too Pepsi. This was the time of “New Coke” and marketing people are always capable of anything.

One thing to keep in mind is the relative obscurity of GIGANTIS, THE FIRE MONSTER. It really didn’t see a lot of TV play until later in the decade, when it was straddled with that “Raids Again” video title.

Of course, it could be a combination of both reasons. “We should really do this one in color to show off the can.” “No problem, all the Godzilla movies on TV are in color except the first one. Let’s do the first commercial in black and white!”

  • bgbear_rnh

You know I feel kinda dumb now. I haven’t seen either commercial in awhile and I did not watch the first because here at work they are whining about band width. I forgot the first commercial is in B&W , but the can is in color. The can in the second commercial could have been colorized as well is they chose to go with B&W.

    Rock earns one point.
