Monster of the Day #1360

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I myself watched The Babadook (not today’s MotD), which I really rather liked, as you’d expect. I love creepy, and it’s a very creepy movie. I know people who thought it was boring, but that’s because they want something a lot different from a horror movie. For me this was quite perfect.

  • Acethepug

What movies is THIS delightful creature from? It looks very sinister (and catlike, hmmm).

Don’t know if I’ve seen this one, certainly not recently.

  • Eric Hinkle

Is that the monster from ‘The Babadook’?

  • KeithB

Ken said that the above was not in ‘The Babadook’.:
    Specifically he said-
“I myself watched The Babadook (not today’s MotD),”

  • bgbear_rnh

    Almost like a Manbat.

  • bgbear_rnh

Shall we ask him to write that on a chalk board 100 times? ;-)

  • Eric Hinkle

Sorry, I’m tired and I’ve been dealing with some stressful people on other sites of late.

  • sandra

Is it the Cellar Dweller ?

  • The Babadook is one of the greatest Horror movies to come out in years, if not decades, and anyone who says otherwise is dead wrong. A beautiful film.

  • The Rev.

I REALLY need to get around to seeing that; I also want to check out It Follows.

I have no idea what this thing is, but it’s cool!

  • I don’t know what that thing is, either, but I agree on its coolness. Been hoping for a confirmation on sandra’s guess so I can go hunt the flick down.

  • bgbear_rnh

Google image search says it is from Night Gallery.

“Pickman’s Model” (1971) HP Lovecraft story

  • That’s right. The model from Pickman’s Swimsuit Calendar.

Haven’t seen the episode, but I think I’ve heard good things about it. Night Gallery pulled off some winners from time to time.

  • zombiewhacker

The cable network Decades just did a 48 hour weekend marathon of old Night Gallery episodes. Did anyone manage to catch it?

  • Rock Baker

I remember my brother taped this episode, but the machine was on it’s last legs and the audio wasn’t recorded! I did think it interesting in that Night Gallery rarely had a full-out monster of this sort.

As for THE BABADOOK, this is the first I’ve heard of it. A newer film, I assume?

  • Came out in 2014, and I don’t think it had a wide release in theaters. I think the only way I heard of it was an article at Ain’t It Cool News. I think it still might be on Netflix. Mostly practical effects; what computer stuff they did amounted mostly to removal of wires, as I recall.

  • The Rev.

I didn’t know it was on or I might have tried; we get that with our antenna.

I’ve only seen a couple of episodes of “Night Gallery,” most notably one with a ridiculously young Helen Hunt.

  • Eric Hinkle

“The model from PIckman’s Swimsuit Calendar.”

I know (hope) you’re joking, but I know of some fan artists who used to do pin-up art of various Lovecraftian beasties and deities.

  • Gamera977

Didn’t Lovecraft describe his ghouls as being vaguely canine-line in appearance though? This looks more to me like a baboon-cat sorta critter, still looks awesome though. After I finish my binge watching of ‘In Search Of’ I’ll have to give ‘Night Gallery’ a try.

  • Gamera977

Just looked at their website and the trailer, it does look pretty darn cool…

  • Eric Hinkle

Well, it does look vaguely canine to me by the muzzle, though I would have said it was somewhat feline as well.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, now that you point it out I can see that as well.

  • Eric – I hope I’m joking, too. As this is the internet, though… No. No, I just can live with not knowing…
Gamera977Night Gallery is currently over at Hulu, though I dunno if it’s on Hulu’s free service or not.

  • The Rev.

Lovecraft’s ghouls are described as being canid in appearance; my “Call of Cthulhu” rulebook has a drawing of one that kind of has a pit bull-like head. (Man, the 5th edition had some fantastic ink drawings.) They also have hooves; I wonder if this thing did.

  • bgbear_rnh

    The Quarterback Princess? ;-)

  • bgbear_rnh

    Rule 34

  • Gamera977

Cool, I have the 3rd ed and the D&D 3rd ed version but not the 5th ed yet.

  • Eric Hinkle

Well, just today I saw a Blu-Ray of a movie titled CALL GIRLS OF CTHULHU, no fooling.

  • I just found out there’s a story called Booty Call of Cthulhu. The tears will never stop.

  • 7superdaimajin

I wish I could get a model like this.

I especially like the red eyes. Hardly ever saw an effect like this at that time.

  • 7superdaimajin

IT FOLLOWS is awesome, creepy, disturbing, and provocative. Check it out.

  • 7superdaimajin

No. Lovecraft’s descriptions were more of the “It was so horrible I can’t describe it” variety. Any actual details tended to be more “tentacles and slime”.

This is a good adaptation and one of the best Night Gallery episodes but the critter looks too much like a werewolf (or similar beast) to suit me.
