    Yeah, I forgot how much strangeness the Boop toons had in them. Thanks Ken, for bringin’ it all back, ya crazy lug!

    Even in the most innocent Boopers, there are not-so-innocent things going on. In “Morning, Noon and Night” Betty has to protect a farm from a gang of alley cats. In the end, she gets a giant rooster to fight the leader of the cats. The fact that there are other words that mean “rooster” and “cat” is not coincidental….

  • It’s amazing how influential these cartoons and others made in the Thirties like it still are. Believe it or not, there’s even a video game coming out next year called Cuphead whose graphic style was inspired by Fleischer Studios, among others. I look at it and I look at some of the cartoons made today and wonder if they will have as much staying power.

    Wow but did Betty ever get into some weird situations. She’ll never replace the glorious lunacy of the B&W Fleischer Popeye cartoons in my heart, though. Sorry, Miss Boop!

  • Dunno if this is relevant, but I’ve been blocked the same way since the weekend and only now just got back on. Why it happened doesn’t matter to me; I’m just glad the site’s back.

    The problem is that there’s no market for the theatrical release of animated shorts. There are lots of great ones being made – but they are virtually only available online.

    Disney regularly releases shorts to theaters (Pixar especially) but yes, no one else seems to think shorts should go anywhere other than YouTube.
