Monster of the Day #1153

One of the greatest thing about this program is that the tone of the episodes varied wildly from episode to episode, so you never knew going in what you would get. Of course, most of the episodes were straight giant monster shows. Then you would get a very kid-oriented episode, a fact I loved. This is one of those, a whimsical story about a boy whose greed turns him into a zany monster.

Yup…gotta be japan. No country does weird kids shows like japan. Everyone else wished they were as weird as japan…

Ah, good ol’ Kanegon, from “Kanegon’s Cocoon,” Episode 15 of “Ultra Q.” One of the rare monsters from that show to subsequently pop up in other Ultra series, albeit in cameos for the most part.

“Zany” is a perfect word for a monster with a head that looks like a high-hat cymbal with snail eyes who feeds on money.

    AWWW ! it’s cute.

  • That shrimp looks a little shellfish to me. Maybe even a little cray cray, fishing for a pun though I might be. Perhaps I should clam up myself before oyster up trouble

Sounds like a pearl of wisdom

Better squid seahorsing around, afore ya go into a state of shark.

I thought this was Ultra Q just from the description. And I wish that American kid’s TV of the time had monsters half as wacky as the Japanese ones.

One of the best and most iconic eps of Ultra Q, both funny and heart rending. A shame to see the Ultra franchise devolve into Pokemon style flotsam, but we have the memories of when it was good.
