Monster of the Day #1143

Three years ago when The Avengers came out, I posted some Marvel monster covers. Now Avengers 2 is out, so hey, why not. And obviously we’ll start with the work of the King.

I will say that grog has killed a lot of men. Oh. Grogg. Never mind.

  • It’s that extra G that makes him truly horrifying.

Otherwise he would just be a rum drink.

  • Beckoning Chasm

He’s really mad because those guys interrupted him when he was painting his toenails.

I thought the men scrambling around on the scaffolding had weird heads, until I realized those were hardhats. Grogg has five fingers and only two toes ? That’s odd.

    and even

Make a good Toho character…Grogg Vs. Rodan. Place yer bets, place yer bets…

I loved the original story’s idea in which Grogg and all his scaly relatives were the reason why China built the Great Wall, to keep out hordes of rampaging dragons. Guess this was in the days before Inframan (or whatever his name is). Now why can’t they redo ‘Reign of Fire’ around an idea like that?

I always thought it was because the emperor’s dog kept digging in the neighbor’s flower garden.

  • Rock Baker

    Now available in zesty cheddar!

How many folks in the publishing chain of creation did that cover go through and no one caught that?

  • Flangepart

“Sir, I have good news and bad news!”
    “Yes, what is it lackey?”
“The good news is, the regular dragons can’t get over the wall.”
    “And the bad news?”
    “Some of them have wings.”
    “…D’OH!”…

This was reprinted from STRANGE TALES #87. The original cover had much more subdued colours. The monster is green, and I think it’s coloured as a night scene.
If anyone doesn’t know, Marvel published a lot of monster comics in the years immediately before it started introducing new superheroes in 1961/62. You see the work of the same creators in them. Several of the new superhero features were launched in the titles, including “Thor” (in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY) and “Iron Man” (in TALES OF SUSPENSE). STRANGE TALES is the title the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” feature appeared in. “Ant-Man” appeared in TALES TO ASTONISH.

You must have read the original story, because they used almost those exact lines in it. Ken might have liked the original, too, as it had the Reds awakening Grogg with a nuclear test. Grogg first pounds on a nearby nomad village until they tell him that, “No, the Commies did it!” (In truly ripe “Native” dialogue.) At which point Scaly goes after them and hilarity ensues.

Actually it’s GREGG, can’t you idiots get my name RIGHT!?! Screw this- I’M GOING POSTAL!!!

  • Defeated by the first pirate that happened past.

  • Flangepart

“Crud…There’s that fungus again. Better go smash a city before it spreads.”

  • Sandy Petersen

He is actually barfing on screen. Which makes sense with his name.
