Monster of the Day #1107

Thundarr meets the Blind Dead.

Neat. Here’s the original painting.

    Seize the Bone!

So Dagar’s weapon is a morningstar with an absurdly long chain ? Doesn’t seem very practical. What if he was in a tight space with no room to swing it ?

  • bgbear_rnh

Looks like he did not knock down all the bones and will have to try to pick up the spare ribs.

  • Gamera977

Well a mace/warhammer/morning star type crushing weapon would be more effective than a stabby weapon like a long sword on animated skeletons. And you thought I couldn’t learn anything useful from playing AD&D….

  • bgbear_rnh

a pack of hungry terriers might do the trick

  • rtpoeman

Hold the chain closer to the head of the weapon. It also lets you throw it and pull it back afterwards. Still, I’d have used a rope. All that metal in the chain cannot be easy to carry around.

  • Wade Harrell

The idea of of an living elephant (mammoth?) skeleton as a monster is pretty cool! Unfortunately, the picture is spoiled by the fact that elephant trunks don’t have bones, so they get an A for originality but a C for execution. Maybe a D because of the morningstar thing.

  • Eric Hinkle

Hmm, a castle of skulls, skeletons in robes, and a giant skeletal elephant? I’m sensing a theme here.

And I never even heard of this guy before, which is a shame. Do any of the resident experts have any knowledge of this title that they feel like sharing?

  • Joliet Jake Blues

my first thought exactly! I’d guess that most people have seen a elephant/mammoth skeleton in a museum, so its not like we’d have no idea what it was save for the trunk…the tusks are a bit of a giveaway even if we cant see the legs at all

  • The Rev.

Despite the concerns (unwieldy if cool weapon, trunk, where the elephant’s legs are supposed to be*), I love this wholeheartedly. Kind of like Attack of the Supermonsters.
*I’m sure it’s because the lines of the legs would have interfered with the people on horseback or some similar artistic concern, but it still stands out.

  • Marsden

Well, this guy probably has one of those magic morningstars that the chain is made of Mithril and can retract and be as short or as long as he wants.

That “trunk” reminds me of a gas mask. Maybe it’s a cybernetic undead mammoth?

  • Luke Blanchard

Its rear right leg is behind the horse’s tail, and its front right leg is behind Dagar. I think it might be rearing on its hind legs. I can’t see its left legs.
