Monster of the Day #1075

Here’s the French poster for Piranha. This one goes with the swarm idea more appropriate for piranhas, but again makes them outsized, which sort of misses the point. That said, it indicates the mass carnage scene, which in a rare instance for those days, this film really pays off on. Kudos to Joe Dante.

If you haven’t ever listened to his commentary for the film, it’s terrific.

Hummm…an alternate poster. Now don’t start cheating. Although a MOD made of all foreign poster could be quite the fun.

  • bgbear_rnh

These are different piranha than the fish on yesterday’s poster so, different monsters ;)

Wait, are they monsters or just regular piranha in an unusual location (with a monstrous appetite apparently)? I have not seen the film before. Better Netflix it.

  • The Rev.

    You really should; it’s fantastic.

They’re maybe slightly bigger than normal, but not enough that they’d be considered oversized. They are in a river they’re not normally found in (they get released from an abandoned lab), but as you’ll see that’s not the big concern.

bgbear: I believe the Pirhanas have been genetically modified so they can survive in colder water than flows in the Amazon, as a CBW project. I think the idea was to release them in the Makong Delta. Only they accidentally get into a river in the US.

So a “fish out of water” type monster, thanks.

Darn not on Netflix. I will pick up a used copy on Amazon marketplace.

  • bgbear_rnh

How monstrous those defense contractors are ;) Probably same guys that modified the great white in Jaws: the revenge to not mind the warm waters in the Bahamas and roar.

  • Gamera977

Bless you brother Bear, I was ashamed to admit that I’ve never seen this either. I keep planning to get a copy and then forget about it.

  • bgbear_rnh

and I am a fan of John Sayles films too although disappointed “Matewan” was about union busting and not about the famous shark attacks in 1916 ;)

  • mtz

Is it just me, or is that the same lady that was attacked on monday’s poster?
    Talk about your bad luck.

  • bgbear_rnh

She is learning that vacations are over rated.

  • Gamera977

Wow, I didn’t notice how close they both look even down to the facial grimace. Wonder if one were copied from the other?

IMHO but the young bathing beauty on #1074 is far and away the cutest…

  • Gamera977

Always good to see my tax money put to good use.

  • bgbear_rnh

even the same what looks like a loose bikini strap. Nice catch mtz

  • The Rev.

    Very nice catch.
This came out a year before Up From the Depths, which is good; I’d hate for the good knock-off to be ripping off the crappy one.

  • Eric Hinkle

You wouldn’t want them to waste it on space flight or something, would you?

And given that the Mekong Delta consists of warm tropical waters, why would they need to make the fish able to survive in cold water?

  • mtz

Thanks. The strap is going in a different direction in
monday’s, but other than that, just about identical.

  • Craig Richards

    Rod Taylor……RIP

  • bgbear_rnh

Not a “super star” but, better loved than many who are. “The Time Machine” and “The Birds” can’t do much better than that.

recently I saw “World Without End” and I believe he got to talk in his own Aussie accent.

  • Marsden

Could it be the same poster artist and that’s his stock “girl in bikini getting et by fish” ?

  • Gamera977

I was hoping to see it spent on cowboy poetry…
