Monster of the Day #1072

Not as bad as yesterday’s film, but no classic. Mostly notable for mixing two iconic ’70s film genres; killer fish and political paranoia thrillers.

  • Gamera977

Cool, but I am still waiting for the killer coelacanth movie…

  • Flangepart

So, it’s women imperiled by fish this week. Not that I’m carping…

  • David Fullam

Has a nice musical score, but that’s it.

  • Beckoning Chasm

    “Heh? Wha?”

  • Ericb

They probably won’t need a bigger boat.

  • bgbear_rnh

something deadly in the water, more dangerous than any shark or killer whale.

I think the leading female mass killer is about 7 people so that is a decent claim against any sea life body count; however, this particular lady does not seem to be carrying any weapons.

  • The Rev.

I rather liked it, myself. I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s a classic, either, but I think it should be better known than it is. I’d never heard of it until I stumbled upon it on one of my Roku channels, and yet I’d heard of Snow Shark before I made the mistake of watching that piece of crap.

  • Gamera977

A Plymouth Hemi Cuda would be cooler, and probably more dangerous.

  • Dear sweet God did I hate this movie. I came to watch a killer fish flick, not a Evil Guvment coming to get us one.

    Still bitter about it.

  • Ken_Begg

Monster on the Campus (sort of), and the Tourist Attraction episode of Outer Limits.

  • Ken_Begg

Well, Snow Shark was recent and thus mentioned more. I will admit that Baraccuda is BY NO MEANS the worst Jaws rip-off.

  • Ken_Begg

After writing this note Cullen was murdered by a government assassin.

  • bgbear_rnh

and the govt assassin has been assassinated.

  • Well it IS Tuesday.

  • The Rev.

I’d actually put it among the better ones I’ve seen, but I may be the minority. I gave it a mostly positive review over on the BMMB.

I know you wouldn’t do that. I remember your Video Cheese reviews, many of which covered Jaws rip-offs, and how bad they sounded (of course, by now I know how bad most of them are from experience).

  • Eric Hinkle

‘Evil Guvment coming to get us rather than a killer fish film’. So, another case of ‘don’t trust the movie poster’?

Your description makes it sound like a rip-off of the original Pirahna.

  • Ken_Begg

No, the government was more inept in Piranha (and the heroes are the ones who actually get most everyone killed), here they are actively malign.

  • Gamera977

    Ah, I’d forgotten about those!

  • Eric Hinkle

“the heroes are the ones who actually get most everyone killed)”

    Ah, the ‘Designated Hero’ rule?

  • Gamera977

Yikes, at first I assumed you meant the lame plot of the government had engineered the barracuda as some secret bio-weapon. Now on reading about the movie it sounds even worse!

  • Rodford Smith

I now have Anne and Nancy Wilson singing in my head. :-)

  • Marsden

    Ooooooh, Barracuda!
